Negative Ads (Continued)
"A top adviser to Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign said Wednesday that Democrats should give more thought to Sen. Barack Obama's admissions of illegal drug use before they pick a presidential candidate."
The above is from an Associated Press article today. The reference is to an interview with the top Clinton "campaign advisor" by the Washington Post, and posted on washingtonpost.com. Was the above MEANT by the Clinton campaign to be a nagative ad, and are they attempting to get the media to spread it? Of course. If Obama were a REPUBLICAN, it would work. Even as it is, AOL (just as, or more, despicable as the despicable AP) made a big deal about the RELIGIOUS ALLEGATIONS against Romney, which have been all over the mainstream media toda (see earlier entry today), while the talk about Barack Obama's drug use (and Hillary Clinton's involvement in trying to spread that talk) has been pretty much ignored.
That is how it works today. Candidates try not to do ads. They try to get the mainstream media to do their dirty work for them. Since the mainstream media regards itself as an arm of the Democratic Party, this works if the target is a Republican. Then the issue is the smear itself (you kid yourself if you think Obama would be getting a PASS on his drug use if his name was George W. Bush). Notice how this was NOT a Clinton AD. In fact, the Clinton campaign DENIED that this type of "attack" on Obama was authorized. The idea, again, is to get the media to play it up WITHOUT BLAMING THE CANDIDATE FEEDING THE INFORMATION (knowing that the mainstream media LOVES "negative ads", so long as they are the ones spreading them as "news"). Since this is a DEMOCRAT (Obama), the focus here is more on the Clinton campaign than on the ALLEGATION against Obama (unlike with Romney, the media does not just go to Obama and ask about this as a serious issue, but makes the issue about the SMEAR--something that just does not usually happen with Republicans as the target--there the substance of the smear is always the focus, rather than the question of whether it is a smear.
Q.E.D. The media IS the primary source of "negative ads" in this country (see multiple entries today), and the campaigns play up to that. The Clintons are especially adept at that game, but Hillary Clinton may be overplaying her hand against another DEMOCRAT (thinking she is on the same playing field as against a Republican, when she is not).
Q.E.D. The mainstream media is beneath contempt, and deserve to disappear (as is happening).
