Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright, part III
The media hysteria on this kind of thing just never ends (without either perspective or real "news").
In addition to the immediate speculation on BLAME (see two previous entries), I heard at least one radio program this moning (Doug Steffen--who I NEVER listen to, but happended to hear as I pushed the "snooze" button on my radio) ask the "question" whether we should ELIMINATE the exhibition of "dangerous" animals, like big cats, at zoos (you know, those PIT BULLS at zoos are really a big risk).
Yes. This is STUPID. NO such "question" is raised by this event. PIT BULLS kill more people in this country than tigers (or other dangerous animals in zoos). ELEPHANTS kill people--in zoos and circuses (are elephants dangerous animals?). An elepahnt was deemed dangerous at the El Paso zoo.
There are FREAK accidents. More people die fron LIGHTENING every year. This hysteria is mainly engendered by an aout of control media trying to HYPE ratings. There is also an element of the fanatical "animal rights" people that make up PETA (or think similarly). Even though it would be CRUEL to "return" (send) zoo animals into the wild, those PETA type of people think it is DEMEANING to animals to be on display for us (I kid you not; I guarantee that is how they think). They would like to do away with zoos (even though today's zoos are often a source of information to PROTECT animals in the wild).
More than 42,000 people die in traffic accidents each year. BAN CARS. Oops!! I forgot. There are a lot of environmentalists who want to do that as well. You can't say something absurd that some fanatic is not proposing.
Notwithstanding the loony fanatics out there, there is no excuse for this media hysteria over isolated events and non-risks (bird flu anyone?--death toll still ZERO in the U.S.).
The media should be ashamed, except that they have no shame.
