From about 1940 to 1970, the Earth COOLED (see information in Michael Crichton's book, "State of Feat"--fictional book but factual information, with charts and a bibliography).

Even though the cooling was not much, it was enough for radical environmentailists to be saying that we needed to do something (fitting their agenda) to stop GLOBAL COOLING (yes, it was supposedly our fault).

What if we had taken them seriously (as, unfortunately, too many are doing with this religion of "globazl warming")?

We should have INCREASED greenhouse gas emissions.  Under the same physics that "global warming" fanatics use as the (inadequate) underpinning for the religion of "global warming",  more "greenhouse gases" would have had a WARMING effect (the actual effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, where the percentages are small of the total atmosphere, is almost surely more complex than the simple "global warming" concept, but let us take that as a straightforward effect for purposes of argument).

Say that we had taken the environmentalists seriously and deliberately INCREASED the emissions of greenhouse gases.  We would look pretty silly now, would we not?

Will this whole "global warming" hysteria, generated for political purposes, look equally as silly 30 years from now?  I think so.
