"Tax Rebates": Another Lie
Remember when it used to be regarded as wrong for the government to simply print money and give it to people?
If you want to know how far Republicans have abandoned conservatives, you need look no further than this economic "stimulus" package seemingly universally approved by POLITICIANS (in a vote buying mood).
Is this really a TAX rebate? Of course not. In one of those illogical "compromises" that have to be seen to be believed, EVERY man, woman, and child in the country is going to get $300.00, PROVIDED you are a wage earner, or in a wage earning family. But you do NOT have to be a taxpayer. Is this not WELFARE for those who do not pay taxes (a significant part of the wage earning population). Of course it is.
And what is the LOGIC for giving the money to wage earners who earn as little as $3,000.00, but not to retirees. The AARP wants to know, but ONLY to DEMAND that retirees participate--not to give the entire idea the ridicule it deserves.
George McGovern lost a LANDSLIDE to Richard Nixon (in the midst of Watergate, no less), partially because he proposed giving $1000.00 to each man, woman and child in this country.
Now Republicans are perfectly willing to go along with this kind of concept. And people wonder why conservatives no longer trust Republican politicians!!!!
It is NOT just this one "stimulus". The idea that it is up to the Federal Government to avoid a recession AT ALL costs, and that the Federal Government is there to put us in a cocooon where we never suffer any pain, is a recipe for disaster. It is the old socialist/communist idea of CENTRAL PLANNING, which history has shown to be DISASTER.
I favor tax cut plans like that of Rudy Giuliani, because the government CAN promote a simple tax policy which ENCOURAGES economic growth. But these BRIBES, which generally provide an artificial stimulus at the WRONG TIME, are economic insanity. At best, they encourage the idea that the Federal Government can SPEND us out of every problem, and the the Federal Government is there to be Robin Hood to transfer money from the rich to the poor. At worst, such stimulus COVERS up real economic problems by printing money, until the whole house of cards comes tumbling down (resulting in someone like Adolf Hitler).
I can't tell you how dangerous this idea is that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is reponsible for solving all of our problems, without any pain to any of us.
For several HUNDRED years, recessionns have occurred. They will occur again. We can limit the damage with sound economic policies. Once we get in the habit of trying to stop EVERY economic downturn by printing and giving away money, we are lost.
