Security in the Wake of New Terror Threat

Peter Greenberg -- AOL Travel Contributing Editor

First, let me emphasize that this is a breaking and fast moving story, and as such, the application -- and speed --of new security procedures will inevitably vary from airport to airport.

But in the wake of British authorities' apparent success in foiling a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives on numbers orf transatlantic flights, you can expect serious delays at U.S. airports whether you are flying on domestic flights or headed to Europe.

In the U.S., Department of Homeland Security and TSA scrambled to implement new procedures at all airports throughout the U.S.

The new rules: passengers cannot bring any liquids or gels in their carry on bags and/or into airplane cabins. Specifically, this applies to all beverages, shampoo, sun tan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency. According to the TSA: "Baby formula and medicines must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint. Beverages purchased in the boarding area (beyond the checkpoint) must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted on board the aircraft."

At this writing, long lines can be found at most U.S. airports as security personnel are hand inspecting everyone's bag, to make visual checks of contents. In addition, you can expect more passengers to be pulled aside for additional random security checks.

For anyone planning to fly today, or for that matter, after today, you must pack light and unclutter your carry on bags. For the moment, British authorities are banning all carry on bags from airline cabins as well as all electronic items -- ipods, laptops et al. And passengers are being forced to check these items. For the moment, the total ban on electronic items, not to mention a total ban on carry on bags, has not been implemented by U.S. authorities.

Still, during peak travel times (7-9 am) and 4-6pm plan on getting to the airport at least 2 and a half hours before scheduled departure times. for international departures, at least three hours before scheduled departure times.

Most airlines have (or soon will) waive cancellation fees and penalties for those who need to change plans because of this developing situation. however, it is imperative for passengersneed to check with their airlines directly for individual policies and rules that may apply during this time.

For more information, you can always go to the
TSA website.

But my short term advice: unless your air travel is deemed essential, you might want to rebook your flights to another day and time.

I tend to agree with the first comment, seriously though maybe if we were a little more like Canada and kept to ourselves and quit involving ourseles in every other countries business maybe people wouldnt be so quick to blow up the world trade centers. You didnt see them crashing planes into Canada. Also then we wouldnt have to spend so much money on weapons and could have more money for the citizens of this country, like Canada does. I have never been to Canada but seems they are doing much better governing then we are.

If you would rather be dead, that's pretty sad. If you are embarrassed by this "Hitler leader" then get out of this country. If your best friends, France and Canada, hate us, go cry to them. What have they ever done to help us? They don't help us in wars or times of crisis. They wimp out. They have nothing to contribute. If you want to curl up and die, that's your problem.  I love this country, I respect those who lead it. Keep in mind, the majority elected him TWICE, so it sounds like your voice was the smaller one there. If you think you can do better, suck it up, and get involved. Campaign for the leader you want. Don't cry about being dead over throwing away your water at the airport. Who cares? Buy a new one when you get to where ever people are in a big fat hurry to get to. Believe me, I think where I need to be is just as important as the next guy, but I also want to get there safely. I also like the idea of people checking luggage. One, it puts weight back down below where it was engineered to be. Two, it eliminates the fact that people think they have the right to bring their entire week of clothing on the plane with them. I have heard complaints that over head compartments are smaller. No way, people's shit has just gotten bigger! Put your stuff down below, keep a pillow, a book, an MPS3 and vital meds on board with you. Grab your stuff when you exit the plane, then go get your checked luggage. Deboarding will go so much quicker, leaving time to wait an extra few minutes to get your stuff. All I can ask people is why they are being so impatient and why they are being so selfish? Be glad someone values your life and wants you to be safe. From the sound of your complaints, it sounds like you don't!

I WOULD RATHER BE DEAD THAN LIVE UNDER THE ENORMOUS CONSTRAINTS AND LOSS OF OUR FREEDOMS AND CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEES THAT HAVE BEEN THE RESULT OF HAVING A RAVING HITLER-LIKE LUNATIC AT THE HELM WHICH HAS DONE NOTHING BUT ALIENATE ALL OF OUR ALLIES (CANADA, FRANCE FOR STARTERS) AND GIVEN JUSTIFICATION FOR EVERY OTHER LUNATIC FRINGE GOVERNMENT IN THE WORLD TO HATE AMERICA AND WHOSE CITIZENS THEN TAKE OUR THEIR MISPLACED RAGE ON THE AMERICAN TOURIST WHO MORE OFTEN THAN NOT DOESN'T SUPPORT KING GEORGE THE FIRST BUT DOESN'T HAVE BODY GUARDS AND SECRET SERVICE TO PROTECT HIM FROM BODILY HARM.
