Here's a great column from Bill Simmons, a diary of five hours of listening entertainment from Mike and the Mad Dog.

I'll have plenty to say about Mike (Francesa) and the Dog ("Mad Dog" Chris Russo), but I agree with Simmons: there's no better sports radio duo, than the WFAN superstars. As Simmons says, they don't pander, and they integrate a real understanding of sports history into their show better than anyone. When it comes to discussing any of the weightier issues in sports, whether race or steroids or labor disputes, Mad Dog is almost invariably out of his depth and the show can be hair-pullingly frustrating. But, day-to-day, it's hard to imagine anyone else keeping it compelling for five hours a day, five days a week.

As to the show, mixed bag, especially if one is a Mets fan. True enough most of the other shows are pro-Mets, but clearly they aren't too interested in the team. As to pandering, Russo arguably does respecting the Giants. One show sticks in my craw -- his implication that anyone who is not comfortable with Bonds succeeding because of steroids is not really a true Giants fan. And, if 1/2 of the show is "out of his depth" on such major topics, something is wrong.
Anyway, since I am up to other "sports radio duo," I beg ignorance. Compared to Mike and Mike etc., yeah ... but nationwide? Who knows?
