Good morning everyone.
Here I am at Widgets Live! (like Yahoo!, Widgets Live! is so cool, it needs punctuation). The conference actually sold out (200 ppl), which I think may have surprised everyone here. It's fantastic that this many people are interested in the whole widgets "movement" (that's the best way I can think of to describe this). As with most conferences, there's a general assumption that people will arrive late, so the conference official "start" is 8am, but the sessions won't begin until 8:45, allowing people a good 45 minutes to schmooze, get breakfast, and generally run late. Or in my case, 45 minutes to find a wireless connection (which I'm still working on doing) and scope out the boys in the room. (Come on, I'm a girl in a male dominated industry. You think I wouldn't be sitting here looking for the cute boys? And for the record, there are a good number of cute boys. Teehee.) I'm also recognizing a fair number of people from Yahoo! - people I haven't seen in YEARS - so I get to run up and make them feel all uncomfortable when they don't recognize me and wonder "who on earth is this girl?" Fun fun fun.
AOL is going to have a huge presence here, which is just totally cool. This conference is all about widgets/modules/gadgets, whatever you want to call them - those things that you can grab from one website and plop into another. We want to let you use them anywhere you can cusomize the content you see. Obviously, I'm all about our blogs, but the lead Architect for AIM Pages is here as well. AIM Pages was the first web-basedproduct we released that let you use off-site widgets/gadgets/blah (you can use some in blogs, but we need to whitelist the sites - AIM Pages lets you use anything).
Um. Am I due for another entry asking if we call the widgets or gadgets or modules? Maybe we'll figure that out over the course of the day today
At the moment, my main issue is trying to find Internet access. I really, really, get frustrated when it's so difficult to find access at an event like this. After all - I'd bet a large percentage of the people in this room are bloggers, and intended to do what I'm doing...blog about the event. How on earth are we supposed to do it without internet access? And why is it that in the past two days I've seen two networks called "Free_Public_WiFi" (one at the airport, and one here), and NEITHER have actually worked once I connected. Frustrating. There's also only power on one side of the room, so I have a feeling everyone will be sitting over on this side (yay for the left side) soon.
It took me a while to get internet access, but I'm finally online, and will be posting regularly throughout the course of the day.
