Now on to Homepage Widgets. Google got up and spoke, again, this time pointing out that their widgets could be used on a website. And, if you can use widgets, why bother writing your own code website? Don't bother reinventing the wheel, just use bits and pieces (via widgets) to come up with a great site. Good point, and a great way for a lazy developer (um, like me) to come up with a heavily featured page.
Then Microsoft spoke about Live.com, which has a lot of cool features, if you haven't tried it yet. The platform is enabling a lot of different ways "to bring their world together" (which is what I think we all want to do) - access the same data from multiple locations, from multiple devices, wherever.
And then Netvibes took the stage. Netvibes is a very cool start page typey system, but all modular, all highly personalizable. Think My! Yahoo with ANYTHING you want on it. Tariq also spoke about standardizing what's out there - why can't a NetVibes widget be on your AIM Page? He said he intends to work with other sites to make this happen (and we intend to work with him!).
As always, the q&a is the truly interesting part...where they get into the "wouldn't it be cool if..." Widgets (well, this was Google, so "gadgets") are all about bringing an application down to a small level where it works within a page, or on a desktop. They need to be simple and personalizable (and, in my opinion, PORTABLE). It all comes down to a need to standardize, though. There are all sorts of universal tools that everyone can make, but companies need to be working together. And hopefully, through this conference, they will! There was also some discussion around how people use start pages - do they leave them open all day, do they just go there once and jump off to other pages. Me, I leave My! Yahoo open ALL day, even though I don't necessarily look at it that much. It's just always open.
Best quote from this? From Microsoft: "we aren't very good at naming." I dunno...they didn't name anything the Wii, did they? :)
