Web 2.0 - Launch Pad

Hellloooo from Web 2.0! It's absolutely unbelievable how many people are here, and how excited they seem to be about meeting new people and talking about the latest and greatest on the web.

I'm in the Launch Pad conference right now, which is where thirteen new companies either launch new stuff, or launch the company itself.  Each company presenting was carefully vetted by a committee of "who's who" in the tech industry (including AOL's own Jim Bankoff), and these are the thirteen that were chosen to present. Each gets five minutes, and details of my favorites (and the ones I think would be most interesting to you all) follow...

In the Chair, presenting: David Evans, CEO - This is a site for people who enjoy music, but aren't truly "musicians." People can play along with professional musicians, basically making horrible music sound really good. As someone who's played piano since I was 4 years old, I can tell ya, there's a lot to be said for playing along with a professional band/orchestra. Future improvements to the site will include the ability to record (to share with others), remix, mashup your music with music from digital warehouses (this is totally cool, I'd love to mush up my piano playing with that of the New York Philharmonic or something), and browse existing music, much in the style of an mp3 download store.

Instructables - presenting: Eric J. Willhem, PhD, CEO - Online collaboration is a big thing right now. In fact, I just started using Google Docs (aka Writely) to share my NaNoWriMo gibberish. Instructables lets people collaborate about anything, though, from offline to online concepts. For example, one of my coworkers found a collaboration going on about how to build a banana shooter.

Klostu - presenting, Ron Kass, founder - "Bringing people closer." These are the folks behind "Board Tracker" (board search, tagclouds, etc) and spoke a bit to the "Boardscape." The boardscape is what it sounds like - the world of message boards. Boards aren't really linked together, there's no concept of a boardroll like there is a blogroll. Klostu is a universal profile you can take from one message board to another, and yanks in all of your board content to one site -tracking threads and conversations for you. Think "board aggregator." It also provides a universal login to various sites, which is sweet...how many vBulletin accounts do YOU have? The site also has the general features of any social networking site, hooking into various open services out there (like Flickr).

Sharpcast (Project Hummingbird), presenting: Gibu Thomas - "PC, the web and mobile working as one." This is an announcement of the expansion of the existing Sharpcast system to "cover all sorts of content." The software lets you access documents, contacts, pictures, mp3's, pdf's, "everything," from a mobile device, online, or offline using their local client. The documents sync as soon as any changes are made. You can also edit the documents online through "Zoho," and any change is sync'd to all devices. (Note to any presenter. Bring an extra battery. :D)  Gibu mentioned the ability to sync data between iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar and the like, which would be fantastic. But, he did not demo it, and I don't see a mention of it on the site. I have requested an invite and shall play.

(Random interjection - don't get on the phone and have a real call during a conference. And not sitting behind me.  Walk out the door for a second. So not cool.)

Sphere - Presenter: Tony Conrad - Sphere lets you very easily search for blog entries about different subjects by time (within the last day, week, etc). The site automagically tries to determine what each blog entry is about (no relying on tagging), and will serve up entries plus news articles in your search results. Today's announcement from Sphere was an integration with MarketWatch (other companies will be integrating this soon). Articles on MarketWatch contain a "related blogs and articles" link, that when clicked will pop up a window containing content that is similar to the article you're currently reading. The window can look like anything, although the demo had it looking like Sphere's site (green, black/green text, rounded corners). It's very cool, and something I can see us integrating more and more, how would you like YOUR stuff to show up on an AOL News page when that link is clicked? Sweet, right? We'll see what we can do. :)

3B - Nicole Morris - aaah, 3d virtual worlds. I love these so much, and yet, run from actually using them like crazy because they're generally awful experiences. 3B wants to present "2d content in a 3d" environment. A 3d avatar can walk between real normal internet webpages, and hang out with their friends in 3d. I got a little lost during the demo, but it looks like you can "convert" a 2d page (MySpace) was the example, into a 3d page. The 3d world will then link to your friends' normal MySpace pages. Any page can be yanked into the 3d world, which is a neat idea, you can stand with your friends' avatars and gaze...together...at your pictures pulled from Flickr. I think this site is definately the direction that 3d worlds are going in. I just don't know if this is quite it.

And now off to the welcome speeches and stuff...more later!

Hi Stephanie - thanks for the kind words. I'd love to show you the next rev of our stuff when you have a few minutes to chat. We're having a great time working with Jen, Frank, Kevin and Lewis so it would fun to add AOL Journals to the mix.

    Best,
    Tony (650-319-2151)
