I travel quite a bit, so I end up driving lots of rental cars. I'm normally not fussy about what I drive (my personal car is a Saturn, so almost anything is a step up for me). AOL generally books "intermediate" class, which is usually a plain ole' sedan of some type or another. Fine with me.
This time I ended up with a Chevy HHR (pictured below). I started laughing out loud when I saw it sitting in my slot at the airport, I so hadn't expected to get a "non-standard" car like this. I never have a very easy time figuring out the details of any new car, I hit random buttons (often the wrong ones, I almost went a little nuts when I rented a Prius), and have serious issues getting the seat right (what can I say, I'm tall). I'm also a New York-trained driver, and everything you hear about New York drivers is true. :)
Last night I drove to Sunnyvale after leaving Web 2.0 around 6:30. It was dark, and trafficky (there's always traffic in the Bay Area), which gave me some time to fiddle with the car. I figured out how to open/close the windows, and finally lowered the seat so I didn't feel like I was driving a Suburban (for the record, I had a BLAST driving a Suburban a few years ago).
I always do idiotic things with a new car, though. This time I turned on my hazards and couldn't get them off for a few minutes, and turned on the rear windshield washer (including spraying the cleaner stuff). It took me forever to figure out how to turn the windshield washer off, I think I was driving along for a good five minutes with it splashing away. I was cracking up - I thought it was funny - but I think anyone watching me thought I was insane.
I do like the car, though. It seems heavy, or at least to someone accustomed to a little Saturn, so I feel like I'm wobbling around the road a little. I was just imagining myself getting pulled over - "sorry officer, I'm not drunk, my wrists are just sore from blogging too much and the car's steering is too delicate." Suuure that would work.
I'm sticking around the Mountain View office today, so no major driving for me. Tomorrow I'll be heading back into San Francisco to Web 2.0, so hopefully I'll be better off now that I've figured out most of the details of the car. And, hey, at least the back of the car is very, very clean.
