Explanation first. I can see why you all thought I was making light of a nasty situation with my Pamela Anderson post. I wasn't intentionally joking about the situation, rather, I was telling you exactly what happened. A post about Pamela Anderson really did take down the site, and I thought it was best for me to be as open with you all as possible. I intend to continue to do that, hope you won't think it's me making light of a very un-funny situation, and hope you will also continue to be as forthcoming with feedback as you have been. I do listen. :)
Now, updates.
Site stability. As nightmaremom pointed out, the Pam Anderson incident wasn't the first time one entry getting lots of traffic brought down the entire site. Every time it happens, we fix some problems, prepare for a certain amount of traffic, but then our numbers double again. Not such an uncommon problem to have as websites go, but we're a large enough site (and company) that it shouldn't be happening here.
Obviously, we have some ongoing problems with the site. Serious problems. We are working on them, and will be rolling out some initial fixes in two weeks. More fixes will roll out early next year, and the engineers are in ongoing talks with other people here to figure out what else we should do. Making the site stable is our number one priority for blogs right now.
File Manager. Can everyone who is having problems please either comment here or e-mail me (unless you already have, in which case I gotcha covered)? I need to know the exact screennames having the problem - each screenname needs to be fixed individually for now. Moving forward, another product manager here at AOL has taken over File Manager and all of Hometown. He'll hopefully start blogging on his own, and can let you know as things change in the future.
And that's all for now. More updates as I have them. :)
