Subject: Mars is back!
Time: 3:33:00 PM EST
Author:  stuartatk

Even Mars fanatics like myself have to admit that Mars hasn't been looking too impressive recently, little more than a brightish reddish star rising late at night. But Mars is starting to get much brighter now, and rising earlier too, and by midnight it looks pretty impressive, shining in the east with a distinctive rosy-red glow. If you're not sure where to find it, just go outside late tonight - or the next clear night - look to the east, find the familiar hourglass-shaped of Orion, look to the left... up a bit... and there's Mars, shining like a bright red "star"...

Ok, maybe not QUITE as bright as that picture shows, but that's just a little "artistic licence" to help you track it down... ;-)

Yes, I think one reason might be that it's diameter this year is more than 4 arcsecs smaller than it was this time 2 yrs ago.  Yet as it's about 10 deg higher, should be easier to see depending on your viewer.  This coming month we'll enjoy Mars in mid-evening hrs here in the States, till its end year opposition.  I have a special fondness for this one.  Enjoying your Journal and pix, thank you!  CATHY
