Subject: Is it me..?

... or is the world going completely nuts? It was bad enough having people believing there was a mile-wide statue of a Face on Mars, or that astronauts never went to the Moon. It was pretty ridiculous there for a while last week when the story about a "bigfoot-like" creature being spotted on Mars ran around the world. But today's Nut Job Story is just... well, stoopid, and I can't believe normally sane people have even given it a moment's thought.

What's the story? Well, there's a rumour (are alarm bells ringing already? They should be!) on the internet (more alarm bells right there) that an American billionaire has launched himself into orbit in a secretly built spaceship, and is now "lost in space." Yes, that's right. According to this 'rumour' the guy built a spacecraft and launched it without anyone seeing it, and is now stranded up in orbit, or flying away from Earth altogether with no hope of rescue.

The story "broke" big time yesterday when a very respected blogger ran it on his blog, telling his readers he would check for details and let them know what was really going on. I shook my head then, wondering why he would even bother, because it was face-slappingly obvious that it was a fake. There's no way such a flight could take place, no way, not in our constantly-monitored world.

Today, the story has been shot down by many, and it seems sanity is returning. What a disappointment. For a while there I actually believed that someone had managed to design and build a multi-million dollar spaceship in absolute secret, then launch and fly it into orbit without any of the dozens of spy satellites or hundreds of thousands of airline pilots, amateur astronomers, satellite trackers, UFO spotters or intelligence guys around the world spotting it. I actually believed that in an age when everyone knows everything, when everyone has a mobile phone with a camera on it, when space advocates ferret out stories and exclusives with almost obsessive passion, that something this huge, this enormous, could be kept secret -

Sorry, got distracted there, I just heard a rumour that Elvis has been seen flying a UFO over Brigadoon, with Lord Lucan and Glen Miller as his co-pilots. Apparently they plan to land it on the Loch Ness monster’s back before giving Bigfoot a lift to the Face on Mars. I’ll check and let you know if it’s true… ;-)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and do this for an hour...

Haha I wrote a story about something similar to this.  (It was a kind of dumb story though.  I had the characters go to Antarctica before realizing that would be dumb because they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the Earth spinning.)

How's Elvis going to get Bigfoot to Mars?  His feet would weigh too much and you'd need a really powerful rocket...:)
