Marking a Birthday

Today, May 23, 2008, I want to mention that Abdu';-Baha was born on May 23, 1844. Abdu'l-Baha usually discouraged any celebration of his birthday. While in the United States, Abdul'-Baha reminded the American Baha'is that on that same day a man named the Bab had declared himself to be the long-awaited 12th Imam.

The Bab had told his followers to watch for another prophet from God. That prophet was named Baha'u'llah, the father of Adu'l-Baha.

Perhaps while here in the U.S. Abdul-Baha heard mention of another event that took place on May 23, 1844. On that day, the first telegrah was sent from a place in Maryland to a spot in Washington DC. That telegraph message was this: "What hath God wrought?"
