HAPPY HUMP DAY, & some tips

The girls hope all their furr friends are doing well, a big BOW WOW to each! Here's some tips for all our furr loving friends.
Essential Ways to Safeguard Animals from Household Dangers:
It is important to read all product labels, including those for new and improved formulas of products you've used before. For example, some powerful cleaning products have added lye, which should not be used in any pet areas. Remember that animals and humans can have reactions to most any commercial product, and that a crawling child or a pet could pick up residue off a floor, then ingest it when licking hands or paws. Many people are reducing their use of commercial cleaning products. Instead, they use commonly available, simple ingredients often recommended in Hints from Heloise, including water, baking soda, white vinegar, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, club soda and cornstarch. Properly used and combined, these products can clean just about anything. In addition, the natural cleaning alternatives as well as pet mess-specific products such as Simple Solution typically work quite effectively for a wide range of cleaning needs. Some folks also keep ammonia and bleach in their arsenal. Never mix ammonia and bleach, since that combination is dangerously toxic. Many people, including those who do not have pets or children, are curtailing use of pesticides and other garden chemicals in favor of the many nontoxic alternatives now available. The Internet is a great resource for finding nontoxic and less toxic alternatives and better garden/lawn care techniques. Do not let pets into areas where cleaners, pesticides, rodent traps and other potentially toxic items are used or stored. Warning: some dogs can open cabinet doors, so childproof latches may be needed...or store the hazardous items in higher cabinets. Close the doors of dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers and other appliances and cabinets. When using a self-cleaning oven for the first couple of times, protect pets from fumes by keeping them far away from the kitchen. Make sure your dog can't get into waste baskets and trash cans. Drinking water from toilets can upset the gastrointestinal tract. Tablets, continuous-cleaning products and other cleaning agents that are present in the water can lead to vomiting, nausea and much worse. Prevention, as always, is best. Keep toilet lids down if you and your family members do not always close the bathroom and powder room doors. And since pets drink from toilets only when they are thirsty, keep their water bowls filled with clean water and make sure they have easy access to the bowl. Some people keep water bowls in several places in their homes. If your dog has ingested toilet water but seems okay, you can dilute any effects by feeding him a mixture of milk and water. Go to the vet if the animal seems ill. Another reason to keep bathroom doors closed: puppies, dogs and cats have gotten hurt slipping down tub edges, and have suffered seriously burns from accidentally turning on faucets. Drowning is also possible. Do not give pets access to garages or sheds, or to basements in which toxins and other dangers may be present. Keep your dogs away from lawns and other areas recently treated with fertilizer, chemicals and pesticides. Store automotive products such as gasoline, oil and antifreeze in areas that are inaccessible to pets. As little as one teaspoon of antifreeze can be deadly to a cat; less than one tablespoon can be lethal to a 20-pound dog.
Please take these steps to protect animals from antifreeze poisoning:
1. Regardless of the type of antifreeze used, keep it in a childproof container and (since animals can chew through many containers) keep the containers out of reach of animals. 2. Repair any leaking vehicle hoses. 3. Make sure pets are indoors when you change or add antifreeze and other automotive products. 4. Wipe up spills without delay to protect pets. 5. Do not drain radiators into ditches or storm drains. 6. To store used antifreeze before disposal, put it into a clearly labeled, sealed container. Recycle or dispose of it at a garage with appropriate facilities for disposing of antifreeze. Check with your local government for your local household hazardous waste collection days and sites. 7. If your pet returns from outside covered with an unknown substance, wash it off immediately. 8. Auto window washing fluids and products to prevent freezing in plumbing can also contain ethylene glycol. Check the ingredients, and if it contains EG, treat it the same as antifreeze. 9. Switch to less-toxic propylene glycol-formulated antifreeze, but still take the steps above. 10. Persuade pet owners never to leave pets in garages and workshops.
Before buying a flea product, consult your veterinarian, especially when treating a sick, injured or pregnant pet. Before using any product on your pet or in your home, always read the label and follow the directions. If a product is designed only for dogs, it should not be used on cats, and vice versa. If you're unsure of how to use a product properly, contact the manufacturer and your veterinarian for instructions. Cords and plugs can look like chew toys to pets. Tape down or cover cords to help avoid shocks, burns or other serious injuries. Unplug lights when you are not home. Power strips and outlets: if you have a puppy or overly curious or clumsy pet, cover all open outlet holes so pets cannot stick claws or tongues in them. You can keep dogs from gnawing electrical wires if the wires are enclosed in metal braided sleeving, which is available from various companies. To repel dogs from household items from wood molding to cushions to electrical cords, make them undesirable. To do this, you can coat them with hair spray or Bitter Apple. First, coat a cotton swab and have the dog approach it. The swab will taste bad when the dog licks it. Then liberally spray the hair spray on items, including places the dog chewed before. The spray's smell and taste will repel the dog. Floor vents. Pets can get their tags or paws caught in floor vents. Here is a solution using the nylon netting found in pot scrubber balls. Wrap two or three layers of netting over the top of the vent, around the sides and ends, and fasten the vent down tight. Even if your dog catches a nail in it, that's better than his face being pinned down against a hot vent. The netting also works over fan covers where fingers or tails can poke through. Use fireplace screens to avoid burns. Wheelchairs. If a household member or guest has a wheelchair, be watchful. Dogs and other pets have gotten caught and hurt in the wheel spokes whether or not the chair is in use. When not in use, store wheelchairs in a room or closet that the dog cannot access. If you put your dog in a wire crate, minimize the changes of his dog tags and collar getting caught in the wire bars. Dogs have choked this way. To reduce the risk, make sure you have a properly fitted floor of some sort that extends to all edges of the wire crate bottom, such as a crate pan and dog bedding. Also make sure the collar is fitted well and that the tags don't hang down too far. You can also remove the collar before crating the dog, but (1) don't leave the collar on top of the crate enabling the dog to reach and chew it, and (2) do be sure to put the collar back on immediately upon releasing the dog from the crate. You want to make sure your pet wears current I.D. at all times in case he gets loose outside the home. For front and back doors, check latches and doorknobs from time to time and keep in good repair. Check gates and fences outside while you're at it. If your dog is excitable or has a high prey drive, he can break through a plate glass window or tear through a screen door to chase wild animals, birds, another dog, the mail carrier, etc. So it's best to close the solid entrance doors and sliding glass doors...and don't leave windows open when you're not home. In addition, if you have low-lying windows, you could block the dog's access to those windows when you're not present to supervise. To keep pets from falling through steps that are open in the back, you can install shower curtain rods to block the opening by twisting the rods until they fit tight. To keep pets from falling from heights after squeezing through indoor or outdoor railing, line the railings with mesh. Block access to window wells near sub-ground level basements and sunken cellar entrances so that dogs don't fall in and get stuck or injured. Block access to indoor/outdoor heating and air conditioning components and power supply lines to prevent injury and electrocution. Dogs have been electrocuted when scratching, chewing or even touching such power lines. Big risks come with using doggie doors. It's dangerous to allow pets to go outside when you're not there to supervise. You might return home to find an injured or missing pet, or a liability claim from a neighbor. Plus wild animals have been known to enter homes through pet doors. If you do have a doggie door, please block access whenever you are not home to supervise. Invisible and electric fences also are risky, since power interruptions render them useless. Other drawbacks: unwanted animals and people can enter the "fenced" area...and highly motivated dogs won't be deterred from chasing a cat, mail carrier, etc. If you have a pool, block the pet's access. Completely cover the pool with a sturdy cover when not in use. Furthermore, install graded steps out of the pool, since a dog can't climb a ladder. Train your dog how to get out of the pool in case an accident happens. Keep ornaments, decorations and candles far out of reach of pets. Ingestion of any ornament, which might look like a toy to pets, can result in life-threatening emergencies. Even ornaments made from dried food can lead to ailments. And shards from broken glass ornaments can injure paws. Avoid toxic decorations. Bubbling lights contain fluid that can be inhaled or ingested, snow sprays and snow flock can cause reactions when inhaled, styrofoam poses a choking hazard, tinsel can cause choking and intestinal obstruction, and water in snow scenes may contain toxic organisms such as Salmonella. Choose safer decorations for homes with pets and children. Dispose of candy wrappers, aluminum foil pieces, wrapping and ribbons before pets can choke on them. If your pet ingests glass, broken plastic, staples or other small, sharp objects, call your veterinarian. In the meantime, you can give your dog supplemental fiber in the form of whole wheat or other high-fiber bread, canned pumpkin or Metamucil, any of which can help bulk up the stools the help the foreign material pass through the dogs digestive system. Dosages depend on the size of the dog. For Metamusil, try a teaspoon for a small dog, a tablespoon for a big dog. For pumpkin, feed one-quarter to two-thirds of a cup. Dogs have gotten injured from power and manual tools. So don't allow pets in areas in which work is being done, and put all tools away when not in use. The same goes for garden tools (trip hazards, prongs can puncture skin or eyes, can topple on to the animal), which have caused injuries to people as well as pets. Nicotine is bad for animals too. Tobacco products can even be fatal to canines, felines and birds if ingested. Signs of nicotine poisoning often develop within 15 to 45 minutes, according to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Signs can include excitation, salivation, panting, vomiting and diarrhea. Advanced signs include muscle weakness, twitching, depression, collapse, coma, increased heart rate and cardiac arrest; death can occur secondary to respiratory paralysis. So keep cigarettes, cigars nicotine patches and nicotine gum out of your pet's reach. Butts contain plenty ofnicotine, so dump ashtrays frequently. Learn more about potentially hazardous everyday products and safer alternatives by doing easy Internet searches. Keep a pet first aid/emergency kit accessible in your home and in your car.
Have a good Hump Day. Keep them paws up y'all, WOOF WOOF!

KATRINA FURRS
THEY WERE VICTIMS TOO...
I have posted this before...it was 3 years ago tomorrow (8/29) that Katrina hit!
When the levee broke, the water came, And flooded the entire town, To save the folks, men came in boats, So not a soul would drown.
"Not any room," the rescuer said, "For dogs, or cats, or pets, Men, women, and children only, Sorry," he expressed regrets.
"You can't go, girl," her master said, As, with tears, he turned away, "I promise I'll come back for you, But for now, girl ... SIT and STAY!"
So Princess sat on the front porch steps, While the dark waters swirled below Her doggy heart nearly broke apart, When she saw her master go,
She could have jumped into the water, And dog-paddled after him, But SIT and STAY were the words she heard, So she made no effort to leap in.
Always an obedient dog, She listened to her master's voice, And his command still fresh at hand, Gave her no other choice.
She had water; she had food, Enough to last for several days, But her doggy appetite left, too, When her master's boat got under way.
The first night on that dampened porch Princess felt fearful and alone, She whimpered nearly all night through, She missed her master and her home.
The next day came, and then the next, With no boats approaching her, She saw a few rush by her porch, But most of them were just a blur.
One night the house began to shudder, The porch shook and broke away, Then, like a raft, it floated off, While on it, Princess SAT and STAYED.
In the morning, far from home, The raft was caught in tangled weeds, Back and forth poor Princess paced, A pathetic sight, indeed.
She stared up at a cloudless sky, Her eyes too tired to really see, But she thought she saw a rainbow, Up above the flooded trees.
It started near the porch's edge, It seemed like a bridge high in the sky, Perhaps if she could reach it, It would lead to some place dry.
She stretched to reach the rainbow, She stood tall on her hind legs, She lost her balance several times, And almost fell into the dregs.
If it truly were the Rainbow Bridge, She knew it would lead to Heaven's Gate. But ... what about her master, Who had commanded her to wait?
She could not forget his orders, And always she obeyed his words, So she'd SIT and STAY and wait for him, No matter how absurd.
Limp, exhausted and resigned, She fell asleep on the old porch floor, Then she awoke, surprised to find The rainbow closer than before.
Easier now for her to reach, She wouldn't have to stretch at all, But then across the murky waters, She heard a sweet, familiar call,
"Princess! Princess" Where are you, girl? Her master's voice rang loud and clear, She stood and weakly wagged her tail, While whining softly she was here.
A reunion to end reunions! Wet kisses, wags, and hugs! Tears of joy and happy howls! Heart strings pulled and tugged!
The Rainbow bridge no longer seen, By the loyal dog that had obeyed Norwould it reappear for years, For the dog that chose to SIT and STAY.

IN THE ARMS OF THE ANGEL artist : Sarah McLachlan
Spend all your time waiting for that second chance for a break that would make it okay there's always some reason to feel not good enough and it's hard at the end of the day Ineed some distraction oh a beautiful release memory seeps from my veins let me be empty oh and weightless and maybe I'll find some peace tonight
In the arms of the angel fly away from here from this dark cold hotel room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort here
So tired of the straight line and everywhere you turn there's vultures and thieves at your back the storm keeps on twisting you keep on building the lies that you make up for all that you lack it don't make no difference escaping one last time it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
In the arms of the angel fly away from here from this dark cold hotel room and the endlessness that you fear you are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort here you're in the arms of the angel may you find some comfort here

MORE ABOUT SWEET PEE

WELCOME
Hope every furr & furr lover is having a Woof Woof of a wkend! Had to take Sweets back to the Vet, Thursday morn, as she was still acting the same way. They did 2 more tests (no charge this time), I was supposed to get the results yesterday, but didn't get them till this morning. However after I got back from Vet Thurs, she started acting normal! Then Friday came, & she was still like her old self! So far, so good. She's doing great! This morning the Vet called with results of the tests to see if she was in liver or kidney failure (she had already given me results for all the other tests including diabetes). Everything was fantastic she said, for a dog her age, they couldn't have been better. A slight elevation in one of the kidney, & one of the pancreatic enzymes, but nothing to be concerned about. I'm so happy, all your prayers worked!!! Praise Him! I asked her why Sweetie would have been so sick for a week, she had no ideal, but since she seems to have worked it out of her system...we'd stop here for now she said. If Sweets should start acting this way again, to call her, next would be xrays & go from there. Thought I'd let you all know, as I know a couple of you have emailed to check on her. TY all. Hope to get back to regular posting next week. :) Keep them paws up y'all & WOOF WOOF!

Also wanted to leave this link (was left in my comments by someone I don't know), to help with location of a Vet in your area if you should need one. LocalVets.com She works for the company, asked to have the link posted. I put it under my "sites" on side bar So, if you live in the areas they service, & Vets there are signed up with them, & you need a Vet, you might want to try them. There's none listed on their site in my city, & only 2 for the entire huge Kansas City area.
I have several Vets around my area (I think there's at least 5 that I know of here in Liberty), it's just I have a problem with Money & Transportation. GRRR I don't care for Banfield here (that's where I took Angel last year), but the others I've tried are good. Will probably use Banfields for shots as they're cheaper on that, but for other things I'll take them elsewhere,

MORE ABOUT SWEET PEE
Update on my Sweetie.
Appreciate all your kind comments, & so grateful to those of you that said a prayer for her.
Saturday she stopped screaming, & started acting more normal. I was so happy to see her acting more like herself, carrying her teddy bear around with her, & even wanting me to play tug of war sometimes. :)
She still refuses to go outside unless I take her, & only "goes potty" once a day, instead of her usual 3 or 4 times. Sill staying right beside me ALL the time.
Took her to a Vet this morning, I was afraid she wouldn't find anything & cost a huge amount. That's what happened with Angel last summer, remember? I ended up maxing out my only credit card (emerg card only), & still haven't got it paid down! Well, today Vet examined Sweets, & did some lab work ($295.), but didn't find anything. Had to dip into my 'buy a car fund' that I've been saving since summer 07. So, she put her on a general antibiotic, & told me to bring her back in 4 days if not better. So, please keep her in your prayers. I love that little girl so much, she's the most loving & loyal of my 3 girls. Angel is more protective, Monkee is our comedian, but Sweet Pee is the lover of the trio. Everyone thinks I spell her name wrong, LOL...but longtime readers have heard the story of why I spell it Sweet PEE, instead of Sweet Pea. LOL
Going for now, but wanted y'all to know how she was doing. Will keep you posted.

PRAY FOR SWEET PEE PLEASE

Prayers for my Sweet Pee, please. She is very sick! We need all the prayers you can send up.
I don't know what's wrong, it has something to do with urinary or bowels, I think.
She screams in pain shaking all over & panting when she goes (she's doing both at same time, so can't tell which the pain is from). I see no blood in her eliminations & the consistency seems normal, there's no straining when she goes. Just a scream! She's eating & drinking ok, no vomiting.
Refuses to go out now, as she associates outside with the pain, so I have to put the leash on & make her go out with me. She's only going once a day & she normally goes more than that. I think she's holding it as it hurts sooo bad to go. This all started yesterday, & I had hoped it would be better by today, but there's no change.
Just laying on her pillow. So sad, I'm afraid it's really serious. She'll be 12 yo next mo.
I won't be able to get her to a Vet till at least Mon. (if I can get an appt then, & if Son can get the car to take us).
We don't have a Vet, will be going to a new one. Ours passed away a few yrs ago, he was so nice, he was really there for the animals & the people... not to just make money. He had no set pay scale, & would adjust your payments to what he thought you could afford. Even let you pay on installments when you needed to. Not many of those anymore! The girls loved him, he was very kind & a really good Vet.
Wish they had a Vet that did sliding scale or low income patients, but not in this area. Everyone has to pay full price, and it's expensive here. Vets don't come to your house here. I wish they did. They have a Mobil Vet but he mostly just gives shots & little things, nothing serious, & is very costly, plus he only works certain hrs.
I'm staying right with her, or she's staying right with me, won't leave my side, even when I go to the bathrm, she's right there laying between my feet.
I'm hoping I can get her in Mon & hoping Son will get the car & take me. I hate for her to be in pain all weekend, but there's nothing I can do till Mon. :'(

HAPPY TUES
How's it going fellow furrs & furr lovers? Hope each of you had a good weekend & start to a new week.
First let me say we're so happy that Monica found Toby! (see previous entry) LOL at the email I got from her saying TY to all of our readers for their visits & prayers, seems he had gotten himself fastened in the bedroom & wasn't outside or lost at all. She spent over 3 hrs running around her neighborhood, worried her furr boy was gone. Glad he was safe & all turned out ok. LOL
The girls are doing fine, no problems here. We've had some lovely weather... not too hot. Girls have enjoyed laying out on the deck & basking in it.
I need to tackle giving them a good bath, that can be quite a chore, so I only do it monthly or every 2 mos. In between baths I use doggie wipes & wipe them down good. And sometimes when I need them to smell nice, I take a sweet smelling dryer sheet & run over them after a good brushing.
Speaking of brushing, they are all shedding, so I find myself using the shed comb on them almost dly. Angel & Sweet Pee love to be brushed... they line up to get a turn. But Monkee wants no part of it! So I have to trick her, my going to the bathrm & telling her to come. Then when I get her in there, there's no where for her to run or hide. LOL I can then cut her nails & brush her. ;) Isn't it strange how furrs all differ in their personalities? Each is very unique, they may have some of the same qualities but they each have their own personality. :)
I made the mistake of leaving the garbage sack sitting on the deck the other night, guess a squirrel or cat got into it, we awoke with a yukky deck & yard. So, before the girls could go out, guess who had to get out at 5:30 in the morning, still mostly dark, & try to pick up. GRRR not happy here, trying to pick up with a flashlight & cane, a dim porch light, & 3 girls waiting at the patio door with their legs crossed woofing 'hurry' at me!
Wishing you all agood week. Keep them paws up y'all & WOOF WOOF!
