THINKING SPRING  ;)

Howdy friends!

Warm weather will soon (I hope), be upon us, children will be out of school, yards & neighborhoods will be full of kids. People will be walking their dogs...(ALWAYS use a leash please), so we thought it about time to post a reminder on child/dog safety!
Do you or someone that you know have children that run toward any dogs they see? Maybe they squeeze them like their favorite stuffed animals. Or worse, do they pull ears, pull tails and step on toes? Most parents seem to understand how dangerous these behaviors can be but every now and then, injuries do happen to children and to dogs.
My furrs each react differently to children. Angel when seeing a small child will immediately lay down, trying to make herself small, & crawl to the child slowly, laying quietly while the child pats her. Upon seeing older children, she'll walk over & wag her tail & sniff them while they talk to her. However, I stay on guard at her side, because one never knows. Sweet Pee, prefers to watch from a distance, I have tried to explain to parents that she is nervous and should be allowed to approach their children first - not the other way around. My warning often falls on deaf ears, however. Monkee goes totally wild... running in circles around the child, jumping, barking, wanting to play! Some kids love this and get her even more wound up, while others are absolutely terrified.
It's very important to educate people, and especially children, about the safest way to approach dogs.
Caution Dog is a company that produces collars and leads that resemble police lines or caution tape. This product is recommended for people with aggressive dogs or anyone who prefers that people not approach his or her pet.
In addition to these items, many shelters, veterinarians and other dog organizations offer products to help teach your kids how to interact with dogs safely.
The San Francisco SPCA has a wonderfully comprehensive web site on safety, and offers a free program to schools in its area.
No one wants their dog to bite your children and you certainly don't need a trip to the emergency room. However, if your child is going to approach a dog, the responsibility falls on you, the parent, as well as the dog's owner, to educate the child in the "polite" way to meet a dog. Please, if you have children or a dog, make sure that everyone knows the right and wrong things to do.
Have a great week, keep them paws up y'all, WOOF WOOF!
