Lesson No. 2 The Turn
As a starter at a local country club I see a vast array of golf swings every day. The experience is very helpful to my golf lesson sessions for students. The two most obvious errors I see relate to turning and balance. Both are importantly related. Here are two easy tips that will improve your learning experience and your game.
1. Many golfers do not seem to understand the importance of turning away from the target in the back swing. To understand this requirement, simply sit in a chair and turn to the right and then to the left. You will notice that upper back muscles are being used. These are the correct muscles to use in the take away and down swing.
2. If you watch TV golf, you must watch the right knee (for right handers). The pros hold the right knee constantly in place. The reason is that staying over the ball is required for a good shot and square club face at impact. From pro to pro there may be slight variations but essentially they are maintaining the position of the right knee. To maintain that position the upper right leg muscles are activated rather than simply the right knee. Never let the right knee straighten in the back swing. Remember we said sit in a chair and turn? In golf it is important to "sit" slightly before taking the back swing. Much easier to maintain the right knee position when we do that and works well with the turn.
