My daughter recently went shopping for a Mother's Day gift for me and wanted me to try on the outfit she bought before hand to make sure it fit. I opened the bag to pull out a light blue tank top (what my daughter calls a beeter) and a pair of light blue and chocolate brown gaucho's. Yes, gauchos.
The outfit was nice though the gauchos were a bit small, so I asked if we could return them and also told her I was not ready to enter 'The Gaucho Zone' wanting to replace them with a pair of capris.
Somewhere in fashion history, in my lifetime, I have seen gauchos before, but they never jumped off the pages of a magazine or fashion run-way into the closets of American women. It actually took me a few years to catch onto the capri pants thing, too.
I get a number of clothes catalogs in the mail, no actual fashion magazines. I know there is a magazine out there geared towards women my age, but have never seen it. As to whether or not it features fashion, I do not know.
As for the catalogs I get, the models in some I would guess are young enough to be my daughter. Should I be wearing clothes like that? I'd probably look like a hooker. Some of the other catalogs are plus size...I am not plus size anymore ,but was on the borderline of it, only a year ago. At any rate, the clothing in those is sort of grand mommyish. The prints are big and the fabrics used are highly flammable, you know the type, lots of elastic.
So, here I am 49 and for the 1st time in almost 14 years back at my pre-baby-ever weight, which I was only at for 2 months before getting pregnant again, so make that 17 years.
Oh, don't clap your hands for me over losing 30 pounds. I did nothing to make that happen. A broken ankle and a good dose of depression took care of that for me. Yeah, I almost feel guilty that I didn't work or break a sweat for it.
So, I pretty much have an empty closet, at least as far as clothes that fit me go. And I'm not sure what to buy.
Jeans always have been and will be a staple for me. Yes, I still wear t-shirts. Infact, I just bought 3 the other day, one Nike, one Adid and another from a company called Life is Good. I picked them off the casualwear rack at Marshalls. Really, when I think of it, that's not much different then the way I dressed in high school. Is that bad?
As for shoes, well, that has taken an unfortunate turn for the worse for me because of my ankle. Yes, I still wear sneakers. I have always had 'bad feet' and need to wear reasonable shoes. But I can kiss flip-flops and any kind of slip-on shoes goodbye, as I still walk with a limp and seem to need really good arch support, plus a shoe that will stay on my foot. The mere sight of high heels gives me the willies. Yes, I look for Naturalizers and Hush Puppies...my 83 year old mother's favorite shoes! I did find of pair of well-strapped cushie sandals the other day that my 13 year old daughter gave her stamp of approval to.
I'm definitely not a Chico's kind of woman. They all look like over aged boho types living in the Hamptons ready for an afternoon of Bloody Mary's. Oh, and I don't buy clothes that need to be dry cleaned, and 100% cotton needs to be ironed. Putting some synthetics in material was a part of the Woman's Liberation Movement wasn't it?
If I were on "What not to Wear", I would so wanna cry being forced to part with the crap clothes I have. I'm not so sure the crying would be about parting with what I own, or having to buy what they wanted to see me in. Pizza toe shoes, nope, never, ever.
So, right now I am wearing sneakers, jeans and a hooded sweatshirt. What do you have on right now?

I'm barefoot with purple-flannel PJ bottoms on that have cheesy pick-up lines like: "Here I am. What were your other two wishes?" And, "Do you know Karate? 'cause your body is kickin'." Then, I have a green t-shirt on that says "Pilsner Urquel" (it's beer).
Ya know? That whole purple and green thing is horribly underestimated as a fashion statement. I RULE!

I had to come over to meet the person who started this whole Flat Scalzi thing. It has had me totally cracking up!
I agree 100% with you on the clothes issue. I'm sitting here barefoot in sweat pants and a big T shirt. Let me know if you ever find a catalog for us 40 somethings!
Love your journal! Martha :-)
