A Million (and One) Lies?

We Endorse Spying (on Our IMs Only): Sneak a peek at our watercooler conversation, cut and pasted straight from our IMs, then join in below.

EyeReadtheNews2Day:
Treatment Description in Memoir Is Disputed
EyeReadtheNews2Day: Now if he embellished some facts about his length of time in jail, I can live with that
EyeReadtheNews2Day: but if he made up details about his addiction treatment, that crosses the line
IPingThere4IAM: I always read memoirs with a grain of salt
IPingThere4IAM: lies or no lies, it's still a powerful book
EyeReadtheNews2Day: but this is different....the treatment center details are the heart of the book
EyeReadtheNews2Day:
and those details have spoken to millions who have read it
IPingThere4IAM: sorry, it should still speak to them...it's his care and precision as a writer that speaks to them most

Stranger Than Fiction: Another Week, Another James Frey Scandal (AP)

Time to Come Clean: Would proof that Frey embellished details of his battle with addictions make you feel differently about 'A Million Little Pieces'?

I understand that James Frey lied, and a lie is a lie, but if the book is good its good whether is fact or fictional.  He may not be a good memoirs writter but he is still a good writer to come up with the book that he did write.    Maybe alot of what he wrote was embelished but i am sure at some point that what he wrote is what he persieved.  If some one who is an addict read the book and  it benefited them through the tougher times and some how made a positive difference in someones life I say who cares if it was 100% true or not.  With Oprah she loved the book when she read it so why is she so against it now just becuase what was written isnt factual.  I believe that James Frey owes her and everyone else an appoligy for saying that it was a memoir instead of a fictional book or labeling it losley based on a true story.  Anything other than that I dont see an issue, the book was good and any other books he writes if it has the power as this one did I will buy and read it !!!!!

I read the book and loved it, and at points I thought it may have been embellished, so what, what book any more isn't. It was his story, and probably he felt everything he wrote, and as he tried to say on Oprah, he was also trying to hide the identities of the people he wrote about. I was shocked at the vehemence of Oprah today, she just kept saying how embarrassed she was, she needs to get over it. It was a good book, and what difference would it have made if it said based on an actual story...she needs to ignore the nit picky people who hover over others, waiting for them to make a mistake. I'm quite sure James did not understand the difference between a memoir and a book "based on a true story". I truly feel Oprah needs to apologize to James for the pummeling she gave him. I hope he can remain strong and drug free. That would probably make those nit pickers happy if they forced him into a relapse! Stay strong James, it was a really good read!

James Frey did what almost every writer of his memoris has done...embellished his life occurrences to one degree or another! I stand behind this as firmly as I would an alligation that fiction novelists use exerts from their own lives...they use personal impressions of appearances, character traits, lifestyles, backgrounds...you name it, of folks they know and have known. Plus, we all churn up and solidify very different memories of our past AND we are all the sum of all things that have happened to us. If you can honestly say you would NOT have even come close to doing what James Frey did...perhaps you should read up on  public "Stoning".

A good book is a good book. So what if it turns out he embellished. What is the fuss about. And why doesn't Oprah Winfrey get over herself already. With each passing year she sets herself up to be the "ultimate" of everything. I realize that's almost sacriligeous to say anything against her....It's only about her. How does Stedman stand it?  Mr. Frey wrote a compelling book. Good for him. We live such pitiful lives that we have to drag down anyone we can. It's almost like the Roman times isn't it? And we're the lions.
