The Onion's American Voices | Jack in the Box

Every day, The Onion hits the streets and asks people to weigh-in on the most pressing issues facing the country. We'll be serving it up to you every day, so keep coming back.

Abramoff Gets 70 Months

Corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in defrauding Indian tribes, tax evasion, and conspiracy to bribe public officials. What do you think?

"I'd be psyched to have Abramoff as my cellmate. Imagine the gifts you'd get."

Rick Simms, Systems Analyst

VERY STRANGE HOW SHORT THESE CROOKS HAVE TO SERVE IN PRISON -- AND WHAT COMFORTABLE PRISONS THEY HAVE.  IF IT WERE I -- I WOULD BE GIVEN MUCH MORE TIME AND SERVE IN A REGULAR PRISON -- NOT ONE THAT IS SO COMFY.   PYH, TOPEKA, KS

NO ONE BEATS THE TORCH TORICELLI. HE STOPPED WIRE TAPS ON DRUG DEALS. DUG UP HIS REPLACEMENT FROM THE GRAVE. BELLA LAUDENBERG.
THEN WALKED OFF THE STAGE WITH A 5 MILLION DOLLAR WAR CHEST AND NO WAR. ASK HIS TIME SHARE PARTNER WHO GOT TO DO ALL THE TIME FOR TELLING THE TRUTH. HOW ABOUT JIHAD HONORARIUMS FOR PRESIDENT PINOCCHIO PANTS? AND DUBAI SCRAPS FOR AL BIN GORE.

Jack Abramoff is a disrespectful person.  Lobbyist spend lots of money in Washington D.C. getting the attention of members of Congress and this has been part of the political process where the people of the U.S. have freedom of speech, freedom of press, right to protest, and right to assemble.  Our elected process requires the voters to be able to communicate with members of Congress.  What Jack "the crook" Abramoff did was abuse his privilege and obviously abuse his office indicated by his choice of words for the people he represented (the image of crime was enough in the image conscious capital while ignoring the lawyer rules of do not promise anything in hypothetical situations--without actually seeing it--and do not discuss it unofficially anywhere in public--including in e-mail that can become public).  This has been seen before where lawyers take millions of dollars, but do not really do anything as an official lobbyist, and they can get caught when the money is abused, because someone is going to complain about the million dollar lifestyle and nothing to show for it (seen this in a small community that went bankrupt in the government after the closing of a military base, closed gambling facilities, closed furniture stores, car impound lot no longer full, closed hotel, closed porn shops, closed strip club and busted one so many times for money it just went down into a biker bar that stopped caring about anything except beer and fries, lost thirteen members of the police force who was publicly hired into the country sheriff, and then found a lobbyist lawyer sitting on millions of dollars as they looked at their budget).
