Background Check

We watched the press conference announcing Iran's nuclear achievements yesterday. Though mildly disturbed by the news, we were more struck by the background employed to give the announcement the appropriate gravitas. Does the curtain and the stage not remind you of a high school? Or some bad company retreat? So, we collected a few backgrounds and will leave it to you to decide who's got the best set design team going. Here are some photos, vote for the best:

-------------------------------

President Bush -- United States

(AP)

What Works: The multifaceted approach gives the Bush team an air of sophistication and resources. The purple lends an air of royalty.

What Doesn't Work
: The fact that it looks like a tablecloth and the slogan, is, well, airless.

-------------------------------

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- Iran

(AP)

What Works: The soft tones and the weightless depiction at once soothes international critics and invigorates Iranians.

What Doesn't Work: This nuclear plan goes through and those doves are toast.

-------------------------------

Chairman Kim Jong Il -- North Korea

(AP)

What Works: Detailed naturalism offers depth to the scene and a powerful, romantic effect.

What Doesn't Work: Without Kim Jong Il on a boogie board, the moment is lost.

-------------------------------

Fidel Castro -- Cuba

(AP)

What Works: Invoking worldwide symbol Che Guevara gives Castro a connection with the golden age of Communism and defiance. And, this could be a Rolling Stone cover.

What Doesn't Work: I'm not seeing a giant cigar anywhere here and Che is now a symbol for PlayStation junkies and spoiled teens.

The multi-faced slogan and sign approach to political events is traditional where some of the original political signs in the 19th century were boxes on a stick (no top or bottom) giving four faces for a slogan.  The United States just does this and it is not a new thing.  The only thing missing in the President George W. Bush photograph of the political event is more American Flags are needed.  Some early 20th century events would have American Flags everywhere just like drapes and tapestries to give the impression that the American Dream is being born there with the politicians.  The colors selected are traditional colors of politics where there can be red, white, blue, gold leafing and bordering, and contrasting dark colors for visual designs, letters, and effects; these colors can be seen on C-Span with the Senate and House of Representatives: gives that President Lincoln of the Union facing the Confederates Civil War feeling of patriotic pride that I have observed in some films.  The President George W. Bush photograph of the event showing the "Plan For Victory" slogan is nice and is very patriotic for Americans, and this is with the observation that every different nation and different culture has their own selection of patriotic colors--watch oriental television and you can see the difference in the selection of colors with different sets of values when compared to the United States of America.
