The Onion's American Voices | Nuke for Nuke's Sake

Every day, The Onion hits the streets and asks people to weigh-in on the most pressing issues facing the country. We'll be serving it up to you every day, so keep coming back.

Plans To Nuke Iran

According to an article by Seymour Hersh in this issue of The New Yorker, the U.S. has drawn up plans to preemptively attack Iran to stop their nuclear program, including possibly using tactical nuclear weapons. What do you think?

"At least we won't need an exit strategy."

Nuke Iran?  Oh, brother!  First they get us bogged down in Afghanistan and Iraq, now this.  What will the Bush administration think of next?  It's not like this will help their poll ratings... au contraire!  And the gall -- they've spent the last five years systematically torpedoing the U.N. and now, when suddenly it's to THEIR benefit, they demand that the U.N. act to punish Iran?

This dangerous game that Bush and his folks are playing has got to be checked... and soon.  When oh when will Bush's pet Congress wake up and start acting like lawmakers, fulfilling their oversight responsibilities, representing we the people?

We've been wracking our brains, but my husband and I are having a hard time coming up with one single thing that Bush has done right since he's been president.  I guess if we were wacko social conservatives you could make a case that he's made good Supreme Court nominations.  And Wall Street types like the way the stock market looks, even though worker pensions are abandoned, new job creation is mainly at WalMart, and overall wages are stagnant.  Or perhaps if we were wealthy we'd appreciate the tax cuts, but at our income level we get less than $300 in tax breaks -- the rising price of gas alone eats that up pretty fast.  The deficit?  The wars?  Social Security?  Border security?  Environmental concerns?  Drugs for seniors?  International relations?  Women's issues?  Health care?  Disaster response?  Education?  Ethics?  Illegal immigration?  He's flubbed them all.  Really, can you come up with anything at all that he's done right?

It's a pretty sad state of affairs, and it's time for Congress to get a grip -- fast!

No one should "nuke" anyone.  Let's knock off  the crazy stuff.  I don't think this would solve the problem, probably only make it worse.
