The Onion | Immigrant's Song
Every day, The Onion hits the streets and asks people to weigh-in on the most pressing issues facing the country. We'll be serving it up to you every day, so keep coming back.
May 1st will be the next "Day of Action" in which Latino activists will take to the streets to protest restrictive policies against Mexican immigrants. What do you think?
"I see what they are trying to do. A day off on May 1st, then the Cinco de
Mayo—before you know it, we're looking at a 5 day weekend."
Brooke Gladwell,
Bricklayer

lWork in nyc, live in the suburbs (half hour away by railroad) and I loved the walkout on May1. still crowded nyc streets but English was the language of the day at the coffee cart, fruit vendor, deli counter. I was not referred to as "mommy" (a latino endearment which I find offensive) once.
Returning home, all went well and then I passed an Oakley'Car Wash which was closed because of the walkout.
My resolution. for now on will wash my own car. I have a house, driveway, hose, bucket and soap. Spoke to my neighbors and we all feel the same way.
Spite me, I think not. Spite you, I think so.
PS: I am the granddaughter, daughter, wife and sister in law of legal immigrants. -
I think it is good that the Latinos step up and be rcognized. The silent American middleclass majority do not really understand the plight of these people because most of the middleclass have never been to a third world country, and if they have it's only to a resort. This problem would not be as bad if our social reform and benefits program were not so liberal. While the conservatives accuse the immigarnts of abuse of the system, I propose that a large majority of the indiginous US minorities have used the same system of abuse not to work at all. At least the immigrants work to develop a better life for themselves while US minorites sit on thier butts collect welfare and deal drugs the latinos by the second and third generation are off the programs and are contributing citizens to the American system. Yes the borders (I live in McAllen Texas) need stringent security, not against the illegal immigrants but against the muslim fundamentalists that hate America and everything we stand for. By the way...if the same silent middleclass Americans would get up off thier duffs and protest I bet we would not be losing our rights to keep or display our Christian, cultural, moral values and practices left and right to minority protectionist laws that are eroding our society.

well.......I agree that people should do it the right way...but I believe it's not that easy...It's very expensive to come to America the right way...for us it's just $300 but for them it's way more than that..it's too expensive and they are very limited and only pick out random people....it's not fair...thus having them come over illegally is the only way for them to come without paying a high amount to come into this country.......they would pay all that money and not even be sure they were going to get their visa or not..people should really check into things before making assumptions...just my opinion...

I know many Latinos across America are very excited about todays boycott and immigration rallies. What I don't understand is why many Latino's, Asians, and other immigrants don't see the difference between illegal immigration and legal immigration. Most people in America do not mind people comming to America to have a better life. We do mind that people break the law of the country to do so. Anti-illegal immigration supporters like myself fully understand why people come to America, especially from Mexico and other Latin nations. What I don't agree with is placing the responsibility of providing prosperity for Mexico on the shoulders of the American Taxpayer. It is well known that Mexico brings in more revenue from money sent back from the United States then the country brings in from its Gross Domestic Product. If Mexican's are so proud of their homeland how can they continue to flee there, and not work to destroy the corruption that has caused such and economic divide between our nations? Todays rally is no more then a group of people electing to disobey the law because it is convenient to them. Border security is of importance to any nation not just the United States. Mexico does not allow free incursions into its territory nor automatic citezenship so why should the United States? Not strengthening our borders is esentially dangerouse to the United States especially in the Post 9/11 world. In closing I urge immigrants to stop labeling people who support the Law and security of our nation as racist. We are not racist and we welcome all who wish to become a part of our great nation. However we have a responsibility to do so the right way.

Greedy businessmen want to hire illegal immigrants for cheap labor, which helps keep their overhead low and their profitline high. So they break the law to make a profit. Not very honest.
If you punish the illegal immigrants and punish the greedy businessmen who hire them for cheap labor, then we might actually get somewhere on this issue. Until then, it's all just talk.
Posted by the grandson of a legal immigrant from Italy, who came here in the 1940's, was not catered to by any means, did not bitch to have a translation in his language put on things next to the English text, paid taxes and made an honest living.
