If the corporations are going to pick apart their cost, then why not create specific costs for specific customers, such as to ship from New York to Los Angeles you charge for each point of handling and bring the specific costs to the customer? The draw back is a lot of profit is hidden by flat fees as they average out costs, so specific accounts would be better for the customer but now it is accounted and reported to the public and people nit-pick without end, create a value there is expectation out of that value.
Competition can be tough and in big business one practice is to undercharge until the competitors go out of business and then raise rates. This looks like someone is going to be pushed out of business or the company is going to have to understand their profits better. One management mistake is that 90% of the profit is for their home while the work is actually done by someone else and this has led to unions where it was greed that drove the market. Surcharge why?
