Because you, Feed readers, found of Employee of the Week so deliciously fun, we're expanding. We're going to post an Employee of the Day every day of the week. Then, on Friday, you'll vote for the Employee of the Week and that person will be enshrined in our prestigious Hall of Fame. Also, please note: the EOTD need not be an employee of the U.S. government. It's open to everybody.
Here's today's winner: Toll booth operator
A toll collector was busted for allegedly pocketing more than $2,000 handed over by motorists at the Midtown Tunnel, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said yesterday.Cops said that Robert Applegate, 27, of Woodside, was hired just last November as a temporary toll collector for the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority.
He soon began the alleged theft of cash from the toll collections, prosecutors said.
"The defendant is accused of highway robbery - taking toll payments from [motorists] and pocketing the money - monies that are vital for the maintenance, operation and repair of the city's many bridges and tunnels," Brown said in a statement.
"We will continue to work with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to ensure that corrupt employees are punished and held accountable for their actions," he said.
Applegate was arraigned yesterday on charges of fourth-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and first-degree falsifying business records.
