Pokerstars Pros Daniel Negreanu & Joe Hachem in the Philippines

2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe Hachem of Australia and 2004 WSOP Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu of the USA are here in Manila to take part in the care of Poker Stars Asia Pacific Poker Tour which kicked off Friday at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Manila.

Poker stars brought Hachem and Negreanu to Manila, Philippines along with other poker pros to take part in the Main Event of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, which is a No Limit Texas Hold’em freeze-out tournament featuring the biggest cash prize ever assembledm, a huge $500,000+. corverted to Philippine Peso currency: Maybe around Php25 Million. This is definitely the biggest poker tournament ever held in the Philippines, and it’s sure to bring around some serious poker in this three-day event which goes for a buy-in of $2,500 (Php125,00), the biggest buy-in poker tournament ever in the country.

Apart from poker pros Joe Hachem and Daniel Negreanu, other poker pros include 22 year-old American Vanessa Rousso, the 2006 Borgata Poker Open champion and the youngest woman to make the final table in a World Series of poker event. There’s also Guillaume Patry and Daniel Schreiber, who are also signed under Pokerstars. There’s also Scottish player Manlee Wan, who can also speak 9 languages apart from playing a mean game of poker.

255 players from 40 countries are in the field, which pumped up the pot to close to $600,000. The top 24 of the 255 will be awarded a share of the prize pool with the 24th placer making at least $5,000. First place looks to be around $200,000 dollars, nearly 10 Million in Philippine pesos.

“We chose Manila because it’s attractive to global people and we know there are many great poker players here,” said Jeffrey Haas, president of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, in yesterday’s media launch at the Hyatt Hotel in Manila Philippines.

Phil Laak and Ali Eslami beat Polaris poker software robot

Representing humankind, poker professionals, Phil Laak and Ali Eslami, narrowly prevailed against Polaris, the poker software designed to challenge human poker players, after four rounds in the world’s first man-versus-machine poker championship. The two won by just 570 points in the fourth and final game in the match.

An audience of computer scientists and a few spectators watched the grueling poker battle in a conference room at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Vancouver, Canada. The tournament stretched until 11pm on Tuesday (July 24). The room erupted in cheers when the humans won.

“I really am happy it’s over,” said Eslami, 30, adding that playing against the computer was more exhausting than any previous game in his poker career. Eslami, a former computer consultant, also praised the poker machine and the computer scientists.

“I’m surprised we won…. it’s already so good it will be tough to beat in future” as scientists make further improvements on Polaris’ programming.

Scientists billed the competition as a milestone for computer artificial intelligence, similar to the 1997 match in which a computer named Deep Blue beat Russian genius Garry Kimovich Kasparov at chess.

Darse Billings, a one-time professional poker player and lead architect of the Polaris team at the University of Alberta said, “Polaris showed scientists that it is possible for a computer to do well at the essentially psychological game of poker. I wouldn’t be surprised if we can beat them tomorrow.”

The man-versus-machine poker tournament was the highlight of the conference on artificial intelligence attended by 1,000 scientists from around the world.

World Cup of Poker by Poker Stars

The best poker players of the world will play for their countries to capture Poker Stars World Cup of Poker IV title. The PokerStars WCP is an international team-based competition where national teams of poker players battle it out for the title of World Cup Champions.

The online tournament will run from July 12th – August 5th. The live finals are scheduled to be played in Barcelona, Spain, from September 4th – 7th. Each team in the World Cup of Poker is made up of four Poker Stars players. This is free to enter so don’t miss out on your chance to represent your nation by qualifying online. Not only will you be playing for national pride, but over $250,000 in prize money.

The fifty-seven teams involved in the competition are split into eight divisions – these are listed on the World Cup of Poker Countries page. A set of tournaments is played among the teams in each division to determine the final eight teams. Jerry Yang is WSOP 2007 Champion - $8.5 million prize

Out of the 6,358 players who started the $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em Main Event of the 2007 World Series of Poker on July 6th at the Rio in Las Vegas, Jerry Yang came out victorious. Nine men from Denmark, Russia, Canada, England, South Africa and the U.S. played at the final table for a first prize of $8.25 million and the most coveted of WSOP bracelets.

The final table started with favorite Philip Hilm, from Denmark who plays poker professionally in England, as chip leader with 22,070,000 in chips. Ironically, he was first to be eliminated and it was Yang who sent him packing and settling for 9th place. The most well-known player at the table, Lee Watkinson, was eliminated in eighth place.

Yang qualified for the Main Event in a live $225 satellite at the Pechanga Casino Resort $1,000,000 freeroll and played under Team Full Tilt Poker. It took over 200 hands for Yang to claim the title.

Runner-up Tuan Lam went all in with Ad Qd and Yang called with 8c 8d. The flop brought another Queen for Lam, but Yang completed his straight on the river and became the 2007 WSOP World Poker Champion.

The new champion picked up the gold WSOP bracelet, a Corum watch, and $8.25 million in prize money. Yang said he will donate 10% of his winnings to the Make a Wish Foundation, Feed the Children, and the Ronald McDonald House.
