Hearing (you'll see)

no such planet

I've recently been doing something I have not done in probably a decade...attempting to cure a rotten mood by just sitting in the dark and listening to favorite CDs.  We're talking no lights, no computer, no radio -- just familiar, comfortable songs washing over me in the pitch black.  I stopped doing this a long while back because it sometimes made me feel worse for whatever reason.  I gave it shot this go-round because pouting and stewing were not working for me anymore.

It kinda worked.  Sort of.  One of my favorite CDs is "Traffic and Weather" by Fountains of Wayne.  They're an alternative pop group whose biggest hit was "Stacy's Mom" (remember?).  The music is peppy and happy but also hip.  The plastic case for this CD disappeared  for some mysterious reason (probably thrown away during a manic cleaning binge) so I never knew what the song titles were...not even the track I loved the most which is all about The Planet of We.  The words are upbeat and romantic (not in a sappy way).  The guy sings about a place where everything is peaceful, relaxed and comfortable...and he's singing it to his special loved one.  Sweet.  A whole planet for the two blissed-out lovers to just exist in all by themselves.

Well...

Last night I suddenly realized he wasn't crooning about the greatness of Planet We.  It was about Planet WEED! Yep. The song is about marijuana...dope, pot, grass.  I looked it up on the net and found the words.  I had to chuckle at my own audio dyslexia.  I felt a little stupid, but also cheered-up somehow.

I've got everything I need
Here on the Planet of Weed
There's not much going on
But it's just my speed
There's no hatred and no greed
Here on the Planet of Weed
Everyone gets along
It's quite pleasant indeed

Oh baby baby
Won't you come with me
Set your mind at ease
Set your spirit free
What a wonderful life we could lead I
Together
On the Planet of Weed

We've got magazines to read
We've got Doritos to eat
So lay back on the couch
And kick up your feet
There's a movie on TV
I've been meaning to see
It's by Oliver Stone

Oh baby baby
Won't you come with me
Set your mind at ease
Set your spirit free
What a wonderful life we could lead
Together
Forever
Life is better
On the Planet of Weed

I see I am not the only one that hears something other than the real words!

I've done that a few times!  Got the words to a song wrong.  The first time was as a child thinking they were singing "Bringing in the sheets." in church.  I always wondered why on earth everyone was rejoicing over that.  ;o)  -  Barbara

sometimes the words we think we hear are better than the actual words to a song.
