For the most part, the mainstream media tends to forget about Olympic sports and athletes between Olympiads. USA Today is a notable exception and does a great job of providing Olympic coverage, year-in and year-out.
Earlier this week, they profiled ski aerialist Emily Cook. Aerials is part of freestyle skiing -- one of those 'extreme'-style sports added to the Olympic program in the 90s to appeal to younger fans. It's highly acrobatic and a ton of fun to watch!
Cook's story is one of those inspiring comeback tales that the Olympics provides so reliably. She was a medal hopeful going into the 2002 Winter Games when her dreams came crashing down -- literally -- weeks before the opening ceremonies. During routine training, she landed badly and literally shattered every bone in her foot. The injury had the potential to be crippling as well as career-ending.
Read the article to see how Cook has clawed her way back to competition in hopes of qualifying to compete in Torino:

Thanks so much for the acknowledgement...this is Emily :) I just happened to find your site and think it's great. If you need any extra insight on our team's progress to the games let me know!
Our American Team had a great showing at our first world cup in Australia last week. Two of our men were on the podium on the first day and the other two the second day (Ryan St. Onge and Jeret Peterson each won an event, Joe Pack was third on the first day and Eric Bergoust was second on the second day)...it was very exciting. The girls are doing well also with Jana Lindsey in fifth on the first day and Kelly Hilliman and myself each ending up the week with two top tens. We are all excited to be back in the US and with even more summer training to go before the rest of our season takes off and we move towards Torino.
Again, thanks for the kind words.
