'Thinking gold is good!' - Michelle Kwan, speaking to reporters after learning she'll go to Torino
Today was judgment day for Michelle Kwan. Would she make the Olympic team after missing the U.S. Nationals with an injury? The answer appears to be an emphatic YES.
She performed her short and long programs back-to-back for a monitoring committee from U.S. Figure Skating. The committee confirmed her place on the ladies' figure skating Olympic team in a press conference this evening, stating that Michelle 'did demonstrate her fitness to compete [in Torino] with Olympic-caliber programs.' The committee's decision was unanimous.
They further stated: "It’s the opinion of this monitoring team that Michelle could win the Olympics. She’s definitely [capable of winning] a medal." Michelle joins Sasha Cohen and Kimmie Meissner as the women who will represent the USA in Torino.
More details of Michelle Kwan's performance today:
Michelle noted that it performing a double axel is what led to the groin injury that kept her out of nationals and she only began practicing them again yesterday.
How does Michelle feel, knowing she's got her ticket to Torino lined up? "It feels awesome," she said. "I know I have a lot of things to work on and a lot of things to think about. [But] I have a shot [at winning gold.]"
