This is, Olympics fans! Well, almost. The XX Olympic Winter Games at
long, long last get underway with Friday's opening ceremonies. I'm
planning to live-blog the opening ceremonies here on Road to Torino, so
please join me for all the over-the-top fun.
Although perhaps not as over-the-top as anticipated -- I have heard that NBC will replace Katie Couric with anchorman Brian Williams as Bob Costas' co-host for opening ceremonies coverage. While I welcome this change from a gravitas point of view, I'm afraid it means fewer howlers to mock (a la Katie's remark 4 years ago when the Iraqi team marched into the stadium: 'The Iraqi team has a tortured past - literally.')
Speaking of the opening ceremonies: Speed skater Chris Witty (shown at left), a 5-time Olympian and the most decorated American in Torino, will have the well-deserved honor of carrying the U.S. flag in the opening ceremonies.
A couple notes about Olympic coverage:
- I'm not going to withhold results of events that haven't been shown on American TV yet. Nor will NBCOlympics.com or other Internet sites. So if you want to wait to watch on tv to find out who won, steer clear of the Internet for the next couple of weeks!
- I'll be covering Apolo Ohno and short track speedskating in depth on my other blog ohnozone.net, for anyone who can't get enough of NASCAR on ice
