So the opening ceremonies are now done... actually they have been for
hours but of course NBC dragged out the wait to start showing them in
the U.S. as long as it possibly could!
Best part 1: Seeing the shiny, happy athletes taking it all in. What an amazing experience to be one of them! Too bad some stars weren't there -- Apolo Ohno and Shani Davis both have medal events this weekend and opted out.
Not sure what Sasha Cohen's excuse is! At least Michelle Kwan was there. She's avoided opening ceremonies in the past but I guess she's trying to soak up her last Olympic experience. Good for her.
Best part 2: When the Olympic torch was passed off to the final torchbearer, Stefania Belmondo, who then lit the flame. That moment always gives me the chills! The way the flames shot up and spiraled around like a fountain of fire was a pretty cool effect too.
[update - almost forgot] Best part 3 - just enough cowbell: When they brought out the Alpenhorns are whatever those gigantic pipes are called, representing the Alpine nations(sort of the cradle of the Winter Games). All of a sudden the stadium was filled with the sound of moos and fiberglass cows were scooting around everywhere. Dancing couples wearing cow-print costumes - including pink fabric on the woman for the 'udders' - completed the effect. Only in Europe!
Worst part: Ugh, by far Yoko Ono introducing and Peter Gabriel performing 'Imagine.' I love Peter Gabriel but he has a million songs that are way better than 'Imagine.' Even some with similar sentiments. That song is a cliche and Gabriel sang it badly.
He looked even worse! With that black overcoat and knit cap, he looked like he's been hanging out in a backstreet alley warming his hands over a garbage can fire.

My vote for worst part is using Geena Davis to represent the North American continent while bringing the Olympic flag into the stadium! She doesn't represent me in any way or anything I find dear about our country!

As an Olympic athlete the opening ceremonies are a spectacle not to be missed the World is your stage, and everyone is watching and or participating in this event. My question is...what's so important you need to be on the damn phone during the opening ceremonies? That's an embarrassment to the U.S. team and coaches that, that woman could not stay off the phone for ten minutes while the crowd cheers for you on a World stage, I shut the opening games off embarrassed at the team we sent to represent the United States, because 1 athlete didn't have the poise or perseverance to set the phone down for ten damn minutes!
