U.S. pairs team makes Olympic history!

The American pair of Rena Inoue and John Baldwin today became the first pairs team to land a throw triple-axel in competition at the Olympic Games. Last month they became the first pairs team to ever land the move in competition, period, when they performed it at the U.S. nationals, an accomplishment that helped them clinch the national title.

Inoue and Baldwin earlier said they planned to perform the move in their Olympic long program as well.

[Update] Wow! Finally got to see the history-making throw triple axel on NBC -- spectacular!

The best part was Dick Button, sputtering: "
Oh I am so proud of them, how delightful -- de... oh how special!"

He was beside himself!

Yes, Dick Button was right, it was beautiful.  I'm hoping they win.

I am delighted that we will no longer be subjected to Michelle Kwan's arrogance and bad attitude. I am sorry she is hurt but how pleasant to be able to watch other skaters not be over shadowed by her .

I was at work but took time to watch some of the pairs skate.  Rena and John were great and deserved much higher scores.  The triple throw was amazing!!!  Good job you two!!!!!!

Rena and John, You skated impeccably, Bravo! I just hope this won't be another judging mess like in 2002,giving medals to teams that didn't perform as well, the Chinese teams weren't flawless and didn't do the spectacular performance that Rena and John did,nor did the Russians. I hope the standings change when the long program is finished.  Go for the Gold Rena and John!

I admit, I was very skeptical about them being able to land it. They supposedly only land it 20% in practice, and skaters usually only put a jump in a program when they can land it flawlessly five times in a row. So how AMAZING it was for them to actually do it! They probably had a one in a hundred chance to actually pull it off, considering the pressure of this competition. Dick Button had a very good reason to be beside himself!
