Dick Button has a potty mouth

This probably shouldn't surprise me, but it does! A Washington Post reporter got to hang out with Dick Button to watch pairs figure skating practice in Torino and came back with some choice quotes from the great one:

- "See that sitting position? That's terrible," [Button] says, watching some pairs skaters try out a death spiral. "If she sticks her can out as if she's -- pardon the expression -- going to the toilet, that's really terrible."

- He says one high-ranking woman used to skate with her arms so close to her sides it was like she was making "armpit farts."

- The new Code of Points scoring system is "constipated." (Can't argue there.)

- Scratching his nose 'with a fully extended, rather rude middle finger', Button says, "I'm not scratching my nose."

- It's important to relax just prior to a competition, he says, and "if that takes getting laid, it takes getting laid."

For more bon mots from Dick read the full article: Ranking the Rink, and Vice Versa

By the way, has anyone caught the figure skating pre-game show on USA, called 'Olympic Ice'? Dick Button is co-hosting it and one of his segments is called 'Push Dick's Buttons.'

Ugh, no thanks. Here at Road to Torino, we love the guy -- but not that way!

I'm so glad that there is a Dick Button whose comments stem from years of first hand knowledge and experience in the world of ice skating.

His expertise in this sport should allow his honest and accurate criticism of the competitors to be heard.

I believe he is, undoubtedly, the finest, fairest, classiest judge/commentator this sport has even had.

I've listened to him for several decades and hope that he'll continue to comment for years to come.

There is only one thing that I can't understand how he has never commented on  over the years.  The fact that the camera man will focus only on the skates rather than focusing on the whole skater's beautiful line while spinning, etc.  That totally frustrates my daughter and myself.

    From a devoted fan,
    Dorothy L.

Everything I read is true. HOWEVER, I don't recall him ragging on ANY American skater... Seemed to me like he was trying to find anything wrong with everybody, but when the Americans came on, he shut up... Kinda unfair to the others. By the same token, AT LEAST HE SHUT UP!

I think the idea was that he was TRYING to be Simon Cowell... He FAILED miserably. If this is the way he's going to add "color", I (and apparently, I'm not the only one) don't want to hear him.

Dick Button has passed his time as a commentator for NBC, and he along with the network should know this now than ever after the Torino Olympics.  He said so many rude and vicious remarks about skaters from other countries, that it annoyed so much I muted the volume and watched the skaters rather than here another peep from his mouth.  Why does he make so many negative remarks about skaters from every country except those from the U.S.?  Doesn't he know the U.S. is not the only country that participates in figure skating, and unfortunately we are not always the best?  I am not saying that some negative comments should not be stated, yet the "toilet" comment went too far, and I am sick of his attitude.  Please NBC, get some balls and don't hire this man to do another Olympics, or any other competitions which he is a commentator, he ruins it for all of us.  He does not understand that the U.S. is a country of immigrants, and we are all descendents of Italy, Russia, Great Britain, Mexico, Australia, Slovenia, and many others, and until he gets that through his empty brain, figure skating fans will be made to suffer until what I fear will be his demise.
