American speed skater Joey Cheek
won the USA's 4th gold medal of the Winter Games today in Torino with
his victory in the 500-meters. Cheek's margin of victory was almost
seven-tenths of a second -- a huge gap in this all-out sprint event.
Silver went to Russia and bronze to South Korea.
Cheek peaked at the right time this season. He came in fresh off winning the World Sprint Championships in January, immediately vaulting him to the short list of favorites for the sprint events in Torino. He'll compete later in the 1,000-meters where he'll face undisputed U.S. favorite Shani Davis, among others. At the 2002 Olympics, Cheek was a bronze medalist in the 1,000m.
