It's been awhile. A lot has happened but here are some new digital paintings and fiber constructions in the works as I work though the process of incorporating the digital into my regular paintings and quilts. Vernon

Subject: Digital Nonobjective Paintings
Time: 10:16:11 AM CDT
Author:  vsims46955

These are digital paintings. They are nonojective in the sense that they are not based on realistic images or photos and are not abstractions of real objects. They're mainly exercises in gestural brushwork.

I've been experimenting with new ideas in Paint Shop Pro. These are somewhat disconnected but are still part of my digital alchemy process Vernon

i'm doing a challenge project for the summer with a friend in england. she's very talented and it is inspiring to work with her. the challenge is to fill a sketchbook with exercises based on line as a design element and to develope tose exercises further, perhaps into a small quilt; i've included the proprosed cover for my sketchbook and a few of the developments from the first exercise; vernon

the latest in the series of digital alchemy collages developed as variations based on the same photograph.  this time it's a tree stump in new mexico.  not a totally satisfying group.  time to develop some new scripts.

i've always been kimono crazy. i don't know what attracts so many fiber artists to the garment, except the sheer beauty and simplicity of the form, maybe. i developed these kimonos from blocks created during my digital alchemy sessions. vernon

Subject: digital abstraction
Time: 5:02:39 AM CDT
Author:  vsims46955

these abstractions are continuing the series. all based on one or more photos, each has had one or more psp scripts applied to it as alchemical operations to transform and to prserve in some cases the original image, and in others to transform it by abstraction.

Subject: digital expressionism
Time: 9:04:59 PM CDT
Author:  vsims46955

having admired the work of hans hoffman and other abstract expressionists, i've tried and tried to render ideas in fabric and paint. however, it is a lot easier and not as messy if done digitally. so i'm working toward a portfolio of digital prints of which this is the first.

here we are again.  through the process of orgaized operations, these images were all derived from the same source photo, the first in the series.

Subject: alchemical operations - digital
Time: 6:17:38 PM CDT
Author:  vsims46955

the alchemists of the middle ages performed a series of operations hoping to turn lead into gold - at least that's what they told people they were doing. what they were really doing is speculative at best, but many believe they were actually performing these operations to purify their souls - turning lead into gold microcosmically by doing the macrocosmic operations and trusting in the words of hermes - 'as above so below.' it made me think of art as a form of alchemy, in particular the digital collage of which i am so fond. i took a wonderful photo taken by my best friend margaret ball in venice - a place i want to visit before i die. the door with grill is the first photo. using paint shop pro 8, i performed a series of operations on the photo digitally and created a series of abstractions - similar, yet different. having printed them out on fabric, they hang on the wall. they say nothing to me now, but i expect they will have ideas for me later. waiting - it seems we wait for anything that is worthwhile. vernon - the would-be alchemist
