Coping With a Layoff
Fortune's latest piece, Confessions of a Layoff Coach, offers some advice for professionals who are faced with starting a new, unexpected job search. The piece also offers some inside info about the job of layoff coach... what do they do? How hard it must be to constantly be the bearer of bad news.
Here's some advice:
Q. Do you have any advice for someone who may be facing a layoff, on how to make the most of outplacement?
A. I would say two things. First, to get the most out of it, you have to be committed to the process. It's like buying a powerful computer with a lot of capabilities: You can just use it to send e-mail and type Word documents, or you can really make use of everything it can do. Outplacement is like that. Take advantage of all the different features and services that are offered.
And a related point would be, outplacement is more than just a resume-updating service. It's a chance to step back, take a deep breath, and take a careful look at your career -- to re-evaluate your goals in life. What do you really want to do next? Maybe it's time to move on to something completely different. This is your chance to find out.

Nice article. Are you in the USA? Do you think everyone is an executive who has been displaced by "downsizing"??????? I have been fired at 48. I just came back to work (I was on leave to recuperate coma, etc....) after surviving a horrible accident and many surgeries. I should be dead but I fought back. I now have a severe speech disability and difficulty eating. My former company only took me back as I was approved by my physician to return to work. The job had a high amount of customer contact and it was VERY difficult foe me to communicate sometimes. People were are so cruel. I have my degree in a disipline I can't use with my disability. I have been trying to be positive but if one more moron tells me to "sell myself", I'll scream (badly!). I have only been living with this for 3 years and by the time Vocational REhab might kick in I will be high and dry in the cash flow as I have been without a job for 9 months.
I am trying. Can ANYONE give me any advice on what I can do? I am single, 48, smart, and do not a to be advised by get rich quick schemers, please! I have a degree in ENGLISH!!!!!!!!!!!!! So ironic......
Thanks layoff coach. PLEASE help! I know what I want to do. I want to work and get my slice of the pie as I did not live to be a failure. I might add, I was never a 9 to 5 professional. I was a blue collar girl, who waitressed and drove a forklift to put her way through school and had the horrible misfortune ( and bad choices) to work in the airline industry. Can you see I have a sense of humor?

Everybody falls down at some point, you only fail if you don't get up and try again. Layoffs seem to be part of a vicious cycle that comes around and haunts hard working people that need to provide for their families. It is not a good feeling to be laid off, I know. Finding a quality job these days is difficult, these are indeed tough times for a lot of people. However keep that chin up and look forward don't look back, remember what your dreams are and find a way to achieve them.
If you are searching for a way to reach your dreams you must look for other opportunity's and be open minded.
