New AOL 9.1 Beta available now

The Web Suite and the AOL Program (also known as "installed-client") both access the same email accounts, just through a difference look-and-feel.  For those of you who also use the installed AOL Program on Windows, did you know that there’s a new beta version 9.1 with the following changes?

  • The ability to browse the web without signing on when you have a broadband or third-party dial-up connection.
  • An Inbox-style mailbox with unlimited storage.
  • Increased flexibility, with the addition of Express and Customized installation options.
  • The ability to easily find and add RSS Feeds to your Favorites while browsing.
  • Increased safety while web browsing with SurfLight™, which automatically warns you of malicious or suspicious websites.
  • Quick access to the latest News by clicking or hovering over the newly added News icon in the Toolbar.

Details about the new version are in the FAQs.

I’ve been trying out the new beta version and it looks great.  Give it a try.  You can use both the Web Suite as well as AOL 9.1 and switch back and forth on-the-fly.

Enjoy!

I installed 9.1. I did not like 9.1, so I removed it. Now, everytime I sign on to 9.0, I get an annoying pop up to upgrade to 9.1.
Also, I get more pop ups in general, even after removing 9.1.
Is AOL trying to piss us off just for the fun of it?

AOL 9.1 is a disaster. Sluggish, buggy. Constant nuisance pop-ups. Installation resets your marketing preferences to put you on all the AOL spam lists. Also tries to hijack your search engine preference within IE. Some of the "quick view" buttons on the toolbar don't work. The media players it installs aren't compatible with WinXP Pro+SP2. This is a known bug with no fix from Microsoft. Installing these players can cause to your computer to crash everytime a website tries to load one of the media files. I know from experience this is so. Custom install doesn't allow you to exclude these media players. Uninstalling the players afterward causes AOL 9.1 to totally freeze & it keeps putting up a pop-up demanding that you install them. This is nonsense and shows where the programmers at AOL have their heads since they are all fully aware of this.

AOL 9.0 has an "update notification" that keeps popping up a reminder demanding you install 9.1. There's no choice. Install now, or get bugged over and over until you do. To get rid of that virus pop-up, find the file "notify.dll" and delete it. It's buried way down the structure under program files. Easy to find with WinExplorer as opposed to me giving a long instruction. That will get rid of the problem.

Use a software like "Start-up Manager" to look at what AOL has put into your computer boot. Remove what you don't want.
