Multiple ways to read your emails

There are many ways to access your AOL, AIM, or My eAddress mail account (let’s call them all AOL Mail for the purpose of this article).  The most commonly known ways are via the web browser and the installed program (aka client).  

But did you also know that there are a total of 8 ways to  access the same mail account?  In other words, the look-and-feel may be different depending on which method you use, but the same emails will be there (dependent on features).  The complete list of the various ways is below, with links to details on how to access them.  I recommend bookmarking the web sites below for easy access.  You can also create a “shortcut” on your Windows desktop, but we’ll cover that in a separate article.

1)    Web browsers

a.    Method 1a) The latest full-featured version of the Web Suite can be used by entering into your browser’s URL address: mail.aol.com or mail.aim.com.

b.    Method 1b) The older version (fewer features than the one above, but doesn’t require as much “horse power” from your system) can be used at: webmail1.webmail.aol.com.

2)    AOL installed program (aka client).  The latest beta version that gives you a choice of an Inbox or the AOL New/Old Mail folders is now available.

3)    Almost any 3rd party email program can be used with your AOL Mail account, such as Outlook Express, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc. since AOL offers both IMAP and POP3 for free.  I recommend IMAP if you want folders too.  Setup instructions are here.

4)    Any email-capable cell phone

a.    Method 4a) use your cell phone’s browser to go to a new upcoming mobile mail service (stay tuned for more info soon!)

b.    Method 4b) many phones have an email program built into them.  If yours does, use the server names here to read your emails while on-the-go. iPhone specific info is here.

5)    Coming soon: a new “lite” version of the Web Suite, called Web Suite Basic.  I’m really looking forward to this one because it’s intended for those who’ve been experiencing very slow performance with older computers, on dialup connections, or anyone who just wants email without all the “bells and whistles” of the full Web Suite experience.  Note: no Calendar for now in the Web Suite Basic.

6)    Classic web mail, which is one of the first (translation = dated/unsupported) web mail product but it still works for now.  Note: this works only with AOL-branded accounts.  Classic.webmail.aol.com.

Remember to bookmark your favorite ones so that they’re at your fingertips.  Enjoy accessing your emails in the many ways that are possible.

    OK,
        I found a way to fix the issue in comment #83 & #81 (TOS agreement unsigned.  Please use webmail client).

    Here is what I did and it solved the issue for most of my screen names:

    went to www.aim.com and clicked on the "signin" link in the upper right had corner and signed in with the screen name that I was having this issue with.

    Then I clicked the "Mail" link

    I was taken to a page that on the right hand side listed the AIM Screen name
    Asked for how I wanted it displayed (robertdegesves vs RobertdeGesves)
    In the section titled "In Case You Forget Your Password"
    Either I had to select a security question or said it was "on file"
    Asked for alternate e-mail address (I had to change it from an old one in one case)
    Asked for DOB, Gender, country and zipcode.

    Below all that are the Terms of Service! (yeah!)

    And finally, I had to enter the characters I could see in the "security check" image.

    And then I could check my AIM mail using my favorite e-mail program.  However, this didn't work on every AIM screen name I had, but it did fix it in most cases.

    I have the same issue as one of the other posters.  I get this error:  ERR Bad login.  TOS agreement unsigned.  Please use webmail client.

    I did a search in the help section of AIM and got nothing at all!  Why doesn't AOL have a "Contact help" feature?

    Please tell us what to do about this stupid error!

    Tae, there appears to be some problem with Web Suite Standard. I get certain MIME multipart emails that appear empty when I use Web Suite Standard, but display correctly when using Web Suite Basic or Web Suite Accessible. This problem seems to affect Safari and IE7 browsers but not FireFox.

    I'd be happy to submit a sample email for you to troubleshoot.

    Greetings,

    Every time I try to access my AIM mail via the IMAP server, I get a strange error, it reads:

    Unable to authenticate to IMAP server.
    IMAP command failed: LOGIN Failed. TOS Agreement unsigned. Please use the webmail client.

    And yet, I cannot seem to find how/where to sign the TOS Agreement, everything I can find, simply gives me the TOS to read, but not to "sign".  Help?  Using this is languishing, for I would have to use the webmail, as opposed to the mail reader I use to read all the rest of my mail.

    Hey Tae,

    Is there a way to access your 'mail waiting to be sent' that you created using AOL 9.0 program, but are now using AOL webmail?  I wrote it yesterday and want to access it today.
