Natural Pest Control for Organic Tomatoes

Tomato HornwormIn a society that seems bent on overmedicating every problem we have as humans (don’t get me started on that one), it should come as no surprise that we tend to overuse poisons to get rid of common pests in our tomato gardens as well.

I am one of those oddballs who would rather do things the way Laura Ingalls did them than the way mass production tomato farmers think is right.

That’s one of the things that initially drew me to organic gardening in the first place – second only to the health benefits of a pesticide-free organic garden home for my tomatoes.

I haven’t sprayed the first poison on one of my plants in years. Of course I also believe that I am to expect a certain – and hopefully small - percentage of loss of my tomato plants each year due to pests and diseases.

The Birthplace of “Fried Green Tomatoes”

By Michael Nolan

It seems like a travesty that I live a mere 3-4 miles from the restaurant that inspired Fanny Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes and I have yet to even mention it here.

Go on, I know you all want to throw something . . . just make sure it isn’t tomatoes.

As a Southerner who adores just about any type of Southern cooking, and a man who has seen the film quite a few times over the years, it wasn’t until I moved back to Alabama in 2002 that I even realized I was so close to the famed Irondale Café, and made it a point to plan a visit. Bringing Fruit to the Urban Garden

By Vanessa Richins

When you think of growing fruit, you may envision orchards that cover acres of land.

Don’t despair - there are many options available for the urban garden.

Some fruits grow on plants that are naturally small. The two most common ones are strawberries and blueberries. Both are small enough to be grown easily on a patio. Strawberry pots can help you grow many strawberry plants in one pot.

A note for blueberries : make sure they have acidic soil, or your blueberries will not do very well…if they live.

When it comes to fruit trees and urban gardens, one word stands out Read the rest of this entry »

ENTRY  #  FOURTEEN  HUNDRED  &  THIRTEEN

These two pictures  are by Dad.

Time is so precious-do not waste it.

Good Morning.

Thest two pictures  above are as you would know are from my tomato garden in 2007, I hope that I cand as good this year, I'm trying to do it.

I have sad in my mood space this morning and.  the reason is that Mary and I had to miss our wednesday night bible study.  We had planed all day on being there but when time come to go we were just not able to make the trip, We sure don't like to miss but when we can't make it, it makes us realize what these things mean to us, everything...

Nancy and some others of you have ask what brand of coffee that I am useing. At the present time it is Dunkin' Donuts. There is only one thing that I don't like about it and I guess you already know. the price. I am buying the whole bean coffee and then grinding it fresh every morning. to me it is good  and it will make you smile when you are drinking it. Come on sit down I am going to do the pouring this morning.

I spent some time yesterday watching  THE EAGLES  it was so interesting watching the care that they were giving their baby, feeding it and watching it's every move.

Kids Love Tomatoes!
Tags: , and

Kid TomatoBy Kira Hamman

Unfortunately for tomato-worshipping parents, this is not necessarily true.

What kids love is (a) dirt, especially when combined with (b) water. Also (c) tools of any kind, particularly those used in (d) digging. Certain kids love (e) worms and (f) bugs.

And all kids tend to have a pride approaching zealotry in anything they produce themselves.

The combination of these factors makes them highly enthusiastic gardeners, and what they lack in skill they more than make up for in sheer joy.

So – get your kids growing tomatoes!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Let kids grow cherry tomatoes, which surely must have been made for them. Even kids who refuse to eat a slice of tomato on a dinner plate will love popping Read the rest of this entry »

ENTRY  #  FOURTEEN  HUNDRED  &  TWELVE.

Time is so precious-do not waste it.

Good Morning.

All is well in the Tennessee Valley and I hope that you can say the the same thing wherever you are. I am already sipping on this coffee and I want you to hurry on in and share it with me, that makes it a lot better. I am enjoying the change that we have made, we buy the coffee in the whole grain and then grind it just before we put it in the percolater, I enjoy doing that, my only complaint is the price of the coffee that I am useing. I think that it is a little on the high side. But it dose taste so good to me and it even makes me smile this early in the morning. And I did not forget you that want tea, it is ready.

Our weather is extra good for these tomatoes, it was near 80 again yesterday, real bright sunshine and we exect about the same again today.

Before I forget to do it I want to say thanks to so many of you that  have given me  so many comments and email in the last few days, it has been so encouraging to me, and for many of you it has been your first time and I hope that you will continue to read what little old Dad has to say. Some of you may have noticed the changes that we are making in the looks of the journal, I hope that it is making it a little easier to read and get the complete story of dad, I would appreciate any suggestions that any of you would have.

Time is so precious-do not waste it.

Good Morning.

I am out of that bed feeling a little better this morning, and I am ready to go get'em  what about you ? I will have the tea and coffee ready very soon. I am doing something a little different this morning, We found a coffee that I like very well, and we got it in the whole bean and we are grinding it. What a wonderful smell that I am enjoying even before my coffee is ready . You can just sit down there and wait it will be ready soon. Tell me all about your night and what are your plans for today?

I would like for us all to get started off right again this morning, thinking good thoughts will help a lot. And don't forget the fresh clean sheet that we are given evry morning , do be careful with it, keep it as clean as you possible can. Just be thankful for another day of life, and use it right. " Time is so precious-do not waste it."

The weather is going to be good tomato growing weather again today, At 4:30 a/m. the tempeature is 50. For the last few days the high has been close to 80. That will make them grow.

The picture at the top of the ponies was taken by Jim while he was visiting us, We have another good neighbor whose farm joins our tomato garden on the south side of us, I don't think that he will complain about us looking at two beautiful ponies.

The 2 photos below are Tomatoes that Sara's father in Italy has grown. Remember Sara's picture is on our smile album.

Boost Your Tomatoes with Companion Planting! - Part 1

MarigoldsBy Vanessa Richins

Companion planting is the art of placing certain plants next to others.

These combinations offer benefits to one or both plants.

One such pairing is the herb Borage with our lovely tomatoes. Borage is an annual, edible herb with lovely blue star-shaped flowers. The leaves can be used in salads. It improves tomato plant health and even makes them taste better. Borage also repels the tomato hornworm, the bane of many a tomato grower.

Another pairing is Read the rest of this entry »

ENTRY  #  FOURTEEN  HUNDRED  &  TEN

Picture by Dad.   This picture is from last years crop. I hope that I can do as good this year.

Time is so precious-do not waste it.

Good Morning.

It's monday morning and I am up and getting ready for the start of another new week, I have the coffee percolating and the water is hot ready to choose what kind of tea that you want.

It's all ready, the coffee may be a little strong, but with 1/2 and 1/2 cream I like it that way. Sit down now have a cup of your choice and talk to me a little while, it helps me to get started a little better.

Mary and I had a good day yesterday, but we were tired by the end of the day. Jim & Beverly came down from Kingsport and spent the day with us. They were with us in our sunday morning meeting. We did have a good, helpful and enjoyable day.

Now I am not going to say even one thing about this being monday and how much we sometines dread it, I hope that we can look at it in a little different way this morng, just be glad that we have been spared to see another day of life, and then go out there and show by the contented look on our face and our smile that we are happy.

Here is my thought for this monday.

" Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. "

Words of Jesus taken from Matthews chapter 5 verse 16.

When Tomatoes Lead to Brotherly Violence

By Michelle Fabio

If you’re reading this, chances are that you are passionate about tomatoes.

So how far would you go to defend your beloved tomato’s right to sit atop one of your country’s signature dishes?

Michael and John Garvin, two brothers from England, came to blows over just this question regarding Shepherd’s Pie after a day of drinking. Michael, a chef, didn’t take too kindly to his brother’s suggestion of topping the dish with a layer of sliced tomatoes—in fact, he responded by hitting John over the head with a shovel.

According to Michael’s lawyer, a threat by John to torch his brother’s flat followed Read the rest of this entry »

Here is a good recipe that Helen thought might be good using green tomatoes instead eggplant.

"Dad please don't give credit to me, please ask Beth permission over at Nutwood Junction" < Click here. " She is the one who posted it on Kitchen Chatter. Helen"

(I did and got a go-ahead answer..... Dad)
Thanks Beth!

Eggplant Parmigiana

1 medium eggplant, peeledand sliced into half-inch rounds. ( Or use tomatoes as Helen suggested, sounds good to Dad. )

1 26-ounce jar of spaghetti sauce (the original recipe calls for homemade sauce--just use a jar!)

mozzarella cheese, approximately 8 ounces of fresh or shredded

Parmesan cheese

1 beaten egg

flour

olive oil

Dip eggplant slices into egg, then into flour. Heat oil on mediumin large skillet and cook eggplant until browned and cooked through (tender when pierced with afork), about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.

Preheat oven to 400°. Coat 9x9" baking dish with cooking spray, and spoon enough spaghetti sauce in to coat the bottom. Layer half the eggplant on top of the sauce, and grate Parmesan on top. Cover with half of the mozzarella. (Fresh is my favorite.) Top with half of the sauce. Repeat layers and grate a little more Parmesan on top. Bake 15-20 minutes and let stand a few minutes before serving.

Normally, I would serve this with a salad and a side of pasta, but since I make it just for me, I eat half of it with no sides and save the other half for the next night.

 It's my favorite! Yum!

Hardening Off Tomato Seedlings for Transplanting

Tomato SeedlingsBy Michelle Fabio

When it comes time to transfer your seedlings outside (whether to the ground or a container), you don’t want to just drop them out there all of a sudden into the elements without preparing them first.

This preparation is called hardening off—toughening up your baby plants so they can grow into big plants with fabulous tomatoes.

You want to get them used to the light, wind, and temperatures outside gradually before they make the big move.

Here are some common methods for hardening off your tomato plants: Read the rest of this entry »
