Inexplicable combination
I'm playing Janet Peterson in 05EN01. We've played twice before, in the 2001 Golden Knights. I won one game, the other game was a draw.
For 21 moves Janet held her own in our 05EN01 in spite of me having a 500 pt rating advantage. My play in the opening was lackluster at best.
Jempty-Peterson (A29) 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3 Nf3 Nc6 4 g3 Bb4 5 Bg2 0-0 6 0-0 e4 7 Ng5 Bxc3 8 bxc3 Re8 9 d3 exd310 exd3 d6 11 f4 h6 12 Ne4 Nxe4 13 Bxe4 Qf6 14 Bd2 Bh3 15 Re1 Bf5 16 Bxf5 Qxf5 17 Re3Re6 18 Rb1 Rb8 19 Qe2 Qc5 20. Rb5 Rxe3 21 Bxe3
Black is very solid, I have the bishop to her knight but my queen-side is slightly scrambled. The position is even or maybe slightly in Black's favor after 21...Qa3. But Janet played something entirely different.
21 Qxb5?? 22. cxb5 Ne7 23 Bxa7
The only reason I can see for this mistaken combination is a wrongly set-up position. With a win here I'm guaranteed a semi-final spot in 05EN01. My score would be 4-1 and the worst I'll do vs Ed Lupienski is a draw.
