Knicks Draft Analysis

First, I will mention that Yannis of Yannis' Sports Journal was instrumental in the making of this article (you go boi')...

The Knicks did exactly what I said they would in the draft, draft Channing Frye with their first pick and then do something stupid after. Isiah Thomas and co. had an oppertunity that in my opinion they blew, big time.

Let me tell you the negatives of drafting Channing Frye:

-The Knicks needed a dominant big man, Frye is 7 feet tall but is only 248 pounds. That is someone who could get rebounds but basically needs to bulk up to be dominant. If they wanted that they should have just kept Nazr Mohammed.

-He's not an NBA-ready center. He does not have that killer Instinct tht you must have to be dominant in the NBA, he tends to shy away from more Physical play which you can't do in the NBA. He also is not a great leaper, which in his means a 6'6 player who has some hops could get a rebound over him, he can also get easily  muscled off of his spot which is not good for rebounding. He gets mental lapses in crunch time too (but that can be fixed). This guy is just soft, he's not an NBA center. If I'm a GM in the NBA that's everything I don't want in my center especially if he's getting paid top 10 pick money.

In those pictures Frye is getting blocked by 6'7 Hakeem Rollins of Washington and 6'8 Matt Carroll. Keep in mind this guy is 7 feet tall, and he's getting blocked by guys 4 and 5 inches shorter than him who will probably never be in the NBA. What kind of trouble will that be with NBA players? A LOT

What the Knicks should have done:

OR

You know, maybe looked at the scouting report, watched a few games, you know stuff that you're suppposed when you use your top pick on a player.

If they really wanted a great center they should have taken the second best center in the draft: Chris Taft. Not with 9th overall pick, but with 30th. With the 8th you take the best talent avaible, Ike Diogu especially if he plays the same posistion as the power foward from Florida, David Lee. With Taft your talking about someone who a few months ago would have been a top 3 pick. The reason he wasn't is because his work ethic and laziness had him fall, he was listening to the wrong people as his workouts went horrible and his stock plummeted. Whcih goes to show you in general that workouts are overrated when it comes to drafting players judge 'em based on their performance on the court. That's not to say workouts hsouldn't be an important part when drafting a player I'm just they are over considered.

Back to Taft...

Even if Taft only ended up being as good as as he was drafted you wouldn't be wasting that much money because his tock fell. So in drafting Taft there was no way the Knicks could. If they wanted a dominant center they should have used their 30th pick on Taft and not wasted their 8th pick on Frye. Chris Taft is an absolute beast and has all the tools to dominate (definately more than Frye), with good coaching and being around the right people he could easily be the next Ben Wallace.

Good job Isiah, you managed to follow in Scott Layden's foot steps by blowing another huge chance at the draft. (claps)

I say we trade marbury as part of a sign and trade to the sonics for ray allen and a bad contract and sign Jerome James. Then we have Crawford at the point with Ray Allen and Q Rich. We can have sweetney and j james as our big men. Their heavy presence will affect the growth of Channing Frye in the weight room. We buy out Allan Houston's contract. We trade Penny Hardaway and Tim Thomas to the Lakers for Brian Grant and Chucky Atkins. Atkins and Grant will provide a veteran presence off the bench. Our starting lineup becomes PG J Craw SG Ray Allen SF Q Rich PF Sweetney and C J James..bench has Chucky atkins for a conventional pg..brian grant channing frye malik rose maurice taylor trevor ariza and the bad contract from seattle plus nate robinson and david lee. J Craw Brian Grant and Q Rich will provide flexibility because they can play at multiple positions. This will put us in a good position to try a sign and trade with Cleveland for Lebron James in exchange for Maurice Taylor (expiring contract), Ray Allen(one of the premier guards), and 1st and 2nd round draft pick. And the perfect coaches for this team is either Brian Hill or Paul Westphaul.
